Hi guys. I don't get to do much o gauge running but I got an MTH Christmas set and am having problem with the volume button.

It says in the owners book that the button will allow you to change the loudness of your loco and other sounds.

My button does nothing. Is there something I'm overlooking? Or not understanding regarding the instructions?

Please help if you have had any similar experience and found a solution.

Thanks, Mark

John,

There is also a master volume dial on the locomotive itself, usually on the underside near one of the trucks (or on the tender, if it is a steam locomotive). My guess is the dial is set too low (or possibly off), which would explain why the unit is not responding to the wireless remote.

Actually, this pot is only active under conventional operation, bnopt when using DCS via the DCS Remote Commander.

Thanks all of you. I should have been a little clearer. It's a Rail King Christmas Express with Proto 3.0. After Barrys and AcelaNYP the problem became clearer. The tender is where the adjustments are, both sound and smoke. As Barry said the Vol adj. is suppose to work both up and down. And under one tender truck is a switch for DCC or DCS. Currently is on DCS. I presume this correct as it was from the factory this way.

Yet the problem with adj. the sound is this. It's either full on or practically off. No inbetween. So do I have a problem or does the sound unit or DCS?

Thanks, Mark

Hi Mark,  I don't think there is anything wrong with your new set or engine.  All 3 of my MTH RTR sets with Remote Commander operate similarly...there is only a couple (2-3) step settings with the Remote Commander DCS setup as far as I know.

I assume Full DCS gives you more volume control (i.e. continuous range like a stereo), but do not know for sure because I do not have a Full DCS system.

I believe 'start-up' is generally at full volume, so a push of the 'vol' button and the '+' sign won't go any louder, but a push of 'vol' followed by '-' will lower the volume significantly.  On one of my sets it results in almost muted sound, but there seems to be variation between sets (e.g. Santa Fe F3 Passenger set seems louder at full volume than others).  Good luck

Robert

PS DCS on the selector switch is correct.

I can assure both of you that is correct.

I don't recall the number of volume steps in the Remote Commander but it does adjust the volume in large steps.

The Full DCS system lets you adjust various sbsets of thte sounds in 5% steps if I recall correctly.

In the Sound Menu, I Keep Whistle Max, Bell at 80%, Accent at 60 or 70% and I forget the rest. (Adjust these to your preferences)

Then you can Change the Master volume with the Volume + or - and they all go up or down the same amount and remain relative. The master is also a reasonable number of steps but may be as much as 10% of the range per step.
