You might be able to add an ERR Railsounds commander to an existing box car. Then you would have a choice of several steam sounds. Not only that but you would have Railsounds 4.0 instead of the 2.* versions in early steam sound box cars.

As I read through this thread, and idea came to me: could the steam sound electronics (I assume they're electronics) be transplanted to the tender of a locomotive without sound?  Or would it need to be sychronized to driver speed somehow?  I've never seen or even heard one of these audio reefers, so I'm not sure how well it would work.

A truck with a pickup roller is also needed for this conversion.

I have a Railroad Express Agency reefer that I don't use. It seems to whistle when it feels like it. The "chugs" increase with speed. I had a tender that had these steam sounds, but it quit working after a short while. I have no use for the reefer since the only postwar I run are passenger cars. I'd hate to sell it to you and have it malfunction, but I could send it next week for the cost of postage.

Yes, Sound could be added to a tender.  I bought a Steam Sound tender from eBay, it was listed as needs work.  When I got it, I discovered someone ripped out all the electronics & dropped in an old Sound of Steam board.  Guess they wanted the newer sounds in their old tender.  Some day, I'll get the parts and build a Steam Sound tender.

That's an easy conversion. ERR sells the roller pickups and also includes them in some of their other offerings.

If you go the ERR route the choices of sound are much better. You might even get crew talk and tower com. Worth checking out.

The older steam sound cars are obsolete and their sound boards leave a great deal to be desired.

I upgraded several of my RS1 boxcars to RS4 from Digital Dynamics, sound is great and for steam you can use the existing hall switch. battery backup for sound also. They are no longer in business but the ERR one should work as well. Diesel rev is voltage dependent. This will go in any car with pickup rollers, space allowing.
