Thank you for your nice comments. I'm working on my last pair of AMS box cars. I also upgrade them by changing their Kadee 803 couplers to San Juan Evolution couplers. These look and work better than the 803's IMO.

 

For a change, I going to begin working on structures. Woodland Scenic has some new O-scale building kits I really like that are perfect for the period I want to create. I have some of their older kits (still in their boxes) that will give me a start on downtown Crystal Springs, Colorado (a prosperous resort/town around 1940).

Looking great.  I want to start weathering my freight cars soon.  Can you explain your process

I can't locate the article that described the exact method I used but found this this presentation given by Kevin Klettke. He is light years ahead of anything I am doing. I think you'll enjoy seeing how he uses various mediums to create very realistic weathering.

I'm traveling right now and when I return, I'll try to give a description of my technique for weathering wooden box cars.

On friction bearing type trucks, you won't see much rust, if any at all. Lots of black soot, grime, and oil....especially cars in service. They get to oily and grimy to rust.

i am indebted to you for posting the link to that fabulous .pdf file on weathering. It is the best weathering tutorial I have seen on the a internet. I cannot wait to try those techniques.
