I could never understand why so much emphasis is applied to 3r couplers and pilots. When several trains are operating around a layout, no one focuses on that stuff anyway. It’s a lot of time, effort and money for nothing.

We three railers still have a center rail so what’s the point of converting anything?

SIRT - You are a much better modeler than I, but I have to strongly disagree with what your asserting.

This Atlas F3 coming down the track with it's 3 rail coupler is obscene.  I thought that before I started converting to Kadees.

This engine with a fixed pilot and Kadee looks so much better.

There are reasons for not converting to a more scale coupler, but the idea that no one focuses attention on the coupler is not one of them. IMHO

Some day these might even get weathered.

Here's some of my work. NY Subways, transit MOW cars and a Lionel H16-44 re-done as a South Brooklyn engine. (The SBK never had h16-44's but they did have some yellow rust-buckets)

all these models are extremely dirty as the NYC transit prototypes were. This is the kind of weathering I enjoy most... im no expert, my technique may not be the greatest but this post on weathering is awesome and it's one of the most fun parts of this hobby for me.

Lots of awesome work in this thread, tons of different techniques and inspiration. Here’s a few of my latest creations.

Nice work.  I like the color of your track too.   Getting ready to paint another stretch in my yard.  I'm Always looking for anther color to try.  Care to share what color/method you used there?

Thx

Thanks Marc. My track is painted floquil rail brown through an airbrush. It leaves a light coating on the middle rail, effectively hiding it a bit more, and also over sprays on the ties as well. I don’t try to cover everything, just what painting the rails leaves behind. Also I tint my ballast glue with a bit of black ink and some of that gets on the ties and rails too. This area has real limestone ballast.

Thanks Ben. I wish floquil was still being produced.  I've been using  Testors Enamel. Raw Umber for my right of way and will sometimes lightly spray over that with Testors Flat Brown when I want to give it a dirty,  rusty  color. If I can find some Floquil I'll give it a shot. Thanks for sharing.  20171001_140144

Bud, How do you like those Lionel SD38's? I missed the EJ&E units.

Actually, I like it a lot.  As a matter of fact, its one of my favorite locomotives.  I WISH I could find the #654!  Debating really hard on installing the scale couplers and fixing the pilots.  Lionel actually included the scale couplers mounts in the box

BK,

Yeah, wishing I got some of these from Lionel.  Definitely add the Kadees and the kinematic pilots aren't terrible, but an easy fix especially if you want to have full length handrails.  Assuming it's got the kinematic pilots just by the looks?   I need to see if they can easily be converted to 2R scale wheels.  I've got some electrical pickup strips, but was also thinking I might go dead rail in these if I could get them to 2R...
