Hi all, Im trying to convert a weaver hiawatha 20 in 2rail passenger car to 3rail. I would just swap out the trucks but they are a very unique color. Can I just add a coupler and pickup to the 2 rail trucks. The car is from the 5 car set G1230s .

Thanks for your input.

From experience I would say you have to change out the wheels themselves. I had bought a couple of Weaver flats with trailers that were two rail but I wanted the road names. They ran good on my Gar graves track but would not track well through the Ross switches. So I changed the wheels to three rail ones. Solved my problem on that. However yours may be different from the aspect. I am not sure if the wheels themselves are insulated for two rail operation and that would cause a problem. I am sure someone will chime in with more help.................Paul

Yes, you need to change the wheel sets. I'm not sure what the comment above about insulated wheel sets is about. 3-rail wheel sets are not insulated...

Anyway, get you some wheel sets, and some 3-rail couplers and convert them. I do not know the design of the trucks; are they "Weaver-design" (Weaver trucks can be easily used) or not?

Or - find some 3-rail Weaver (or other) trucks and fiddle with paint colors until you are happy. I'll bet that this H'watha truck color has been produced. Weaver's Scalecoat paint line was sold to...somebody. Sounds like Internet search time!

Scalecoat paint was sold to Minuteman Scale Models located in Hollis, NH. They have a website at www.minutemanscalemodels.com. I bought a can of UP Harbor Mist gray to paint the side truck frames of an Atlas F3. The paint looks good but didn't totally match the existing gray on the Atlas model. As you can see it is a little darker. Since I am no expert on the UP I'm not sure which gray is closer to the prototype. image
