Weaver Conventional 2R Brass Locos - Motor quality?

I have a Weaver 2R K4s. It is the quietest drive I own. Runs very well w my DCC.

If you are referring to Weaver brass steam locomotives, they were all done in the 1990's and 2000's and had Pittman can motors.  Very good runners.

Pittmans are top of the line, but those Chinese windshield wiper motors do the job well and last a very long time.  Noise is usually the flywheel.

I think it depends on engine size. 2-8-0s and 0-6-0s have Japanese Mabuchis.

I pulled a Chinese motor out of a Williams J, and somehow lost it.  I regret that - my J no longer goes at passenger train speed.

Sometimes gears are matched to motor speed.  Different motors have vastly different speed characteristics.

The MTH Diesels I maintained for the club routinely made it ten years of daily operation.  The weak point is the bronze armature bearing closest to the worm.  We would eat up three sets of axle gears and a worm well before a motor failure.

I would buy the locomotive while it is available and then decide (after running it a while) if the motor needs to be replaced.

I have a weaver PRR 2-8-0 and I put DCC in it.  It runs well.   No issues.

My Weaver Hiawatha Atlantic came with a Mabuchi 550. I replaced it with a Pittman 9233. No problem with either motor actually and the swap was painless.

I have 2 of them ,#1&#3 do you know if the made 2 &4?

I don’t know that. I have a 3 and have seen 1s. I would be a little surprised if they did all 4 but who knows?
