Weekend Photo Fun starts early.
Last year I tried to convince Andy at MTH to make a Death Valley Railroad train. Yes there really was a Death Valley Railroad back in the early part of the last century. I guess we know MTH isn't going to make one so I went ahead and relettered a Railking 2-8-0.

Can you guys spot the variation on these two darker blue minimax cars with the internal struts?IMG_20201022_220316340

I still need to purchase the earlier light blue minimax.   But most of those have a saggy roof due to lack of support struts.



Answer to variation question:

The General Mills logo is four from the left on the minimax on the left of the picture.  The common version is the minimax on the right.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's photos this week always great.

So I am clearing out lots of old model railway magazines from an estate. These 1938/9 The Model Railroader are the oldest others from 40's and 50's and later years. Interesting Lionel ad in 1938. Interesting reading of the history of model railroading through the years. Will take stacks of magazines to sell or give away at a (socially distanced outdoor) model train club meet this weekend.

I look after the grand kids most of each week. With my train loving grandson we play / run trains most days; I have trained him well!  We set up a large loop of K-Line 0-120 loop down the halls through the living room and kitchen etc. laid old sheets down over the carpet to catch any debris. He does not like running trains but loves to push trains and likes really really really really long trains. So we use gutted dummy engines he can push with no motors. With a DVD of circus trains playing in the living room while we played he had me keep adding circus theme cars till the engine was almost touching the caboose as can be seen in the one photo. Mostly Lionel flat cars with lots of K-Line circus wagons etc. I use the quick set up K-Line track and lots of circus theme trains in the average year at my large displays at model train shows, so good to get them out for a few laps this rare year.

After he headed home for the day I had hooked up to the outside rails the MTH TIU and ran my MTH 2 rail 4449 SP Daylight train with DCS . I had obtained a nicely built wooden kit SP Daylight train set, 2 rail, apparently built by B-C Models in the 1960's. I was able to change to a longer Kadee coupler one on one end of each car to get it go around this the 0-120 track. There is still a 2 car and 3 car articulated cars that I have to work on to get them added to the train moved out the connecting piece to the shared trucks to get it to fit around the curves. This is the first run of this set, it looks great with the MTH engine.  Looking forward to trying it on the garden railway club next year.

Just one bite?

That's one more bite than I could stomach!   I wouldn't be able to get past the smell.

The four butter packets should have helped some!!!  (I only noticed, since my Doctor just put me on a low Cholesterol diet)

As you know I’ve been posting pictures of the city of Altoona on which I have been making rapid progress due to the pandemic. I was hoping to have this Downtown  Deco structure all done and installed but didn’t quite make it. It will take another day or two. These are plaster structures.  I actually purchased this one 16 years ago intending to install it in this part of Altoona but only now am I getting around to it. Here is a picture of it nearing completion on my workbench:

On Tuesday a CN/GTW local train was speeding East back to Battle Creek, Michigan.  Canadian National SD60 diesel-electric locomotive #5421 was pulling the local freight train.

Near the end of the train were a KRL KASGRO RAIL heavy duty flat car and a large depressed center flat car. That is not common in most local trains. I wish I had been there at the time the loaded depressed center flat car passed through Vicksburg, Michigan.

This is Amtrak's Capitol Limited (29) arriving at Rockville Station in Maryland.

Nice photo. I miss going to the local railroad station and watching/riding the trains. I'm curious to know how much passenger activity there was when the train stopped. The platforms look empty. It's good to see the train running but Amtrak is in need of funding.

Thank you! that station is also shared with MARC (Maryland Commuter rail). In terms of commuters, there was no more than a dozen for each train, although pre-COVID there we not too many either since it is right outside of DC and still in subway territory. Amtrak on the other hand, when I saw the same train in January it had two engines and seven superliner cars. A couple of passengers got on, about the normal for that station.

The H30 hoppers were produced in China, and therefore, I would assume that Atlas has the tooling, or the rights, as they acquired all the foreign tooling. The Milwaukee Road wagon top boxcars were also produced in China. I have a Conrail H30 that Joe Hayter gave as a thank you for filling in for Paul Fischer at the manufacturers' presentation at the TCA Museum years ago. It is one of my prized pieces.
