Farther down the Parkway you have Chateau Morrisette  one of the nicer winery's in the area which also has a hotel and restaurant.
here's the link.

One slight correction:  There are no lodging accommodations on the Chateau Morrisette property.  I was a regular visitor there in the years I lived in Blacksburg.  A great assortment of excellent wines and a fine restaurant, but no hotel.

I highly recommend the Hotel Roanoke (originally built and owned by the N&W and now owned by Virginia Tech).  A grand hotel in the tradition of grand old hotels, and an excellent dining experience.  Walking distance from the O Winston Link Museum (a must see) and the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

UPW;

Just a little bit of trivia about the Panama Canal.  Those massive gate are perfectly balanced and powered by 7 hp motors.  When it was first constructed, it was considered the greatest feat of engineering in the modern world (1903).  And, those engines that help guide the ships through the locks of the canal are called mules.  When I was stationed there (a lifetime ago), those mules could go in either direction.

my mistake but if your in the area it'll make an excellent day trip.

I don't have any O gauge pics this weekend, but I did take a few on a friend's HO scale layout.

The first few are some German switching engines made by Rocco.  The way things are going at MTH, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these appearing in O gauge someday (actually, the top one is already availalbe in O, but not in the US).

The only US engine in the mix is this BNSF AC44.  It's truly amazing the variety and quality of motive power available in HO scale.  This Athern models look and runs very well, yet only costs about 80 dollars.  However, this is a basic model; an HO scale AC44 with working ditchlights, sound, DCC, etc, could easily cost over half of what the same engine would cost in O.

Joe, that standard gauge Commodore Vanderbilt is sweet looking!

What?  A Hudson at the head of a Pennsy?  I just became the next custodian of this beautiful 773.  Thanks to its previous owner, Mr. Pierce, for taking such good care of it.  I will try to do the same!

I don't have my layout up yet, but am staring with the benchwork here in a few days.  I think I have settled on a trackplan, but as we all know that could change as the layout is being built.

Here is a screenshot of my trackplan.  It will be built with Fastrack and be hi-rail.  I plan to do my layout in winter, have snow covered grounds and trees.   Let me know what you think of the plan.

The whole left side of the layout is open to the basement and the top side and left side are against the wall.  The square near the top left corner is a access point.  The dark line along the back and down the left side represents a grade, as the track to the top and left of the line will go up about 3 inches.  I just was not sure how to do that with RR-Tracks.

Hello,

I was curious about the type of switches you are using. Looks like a neat track plan as well, are you using 027 track? Would like to see more overall pics in the future. Nice work.
