You have made it to the first weekend of Spring. Since it is the weekend it is time for Weekend Photo Fun.

I was at Black Dog Salvage here in Roanoke a couple of weeks ago and saw this neon sign from the old Clover Dairy that use to be in Roanoke. I think it would make a nice Miller Engineering Sign;

Last Saturday I was at the Virginia Museum of Transportation running some trains;

   Last weekend, No. 17, the YORK, commenced operations on the historic Northern Central Railway between New Freedom and Hanover Junction south of York, about 6 miles west of Exit 4 on I-83, under the auspices of Steam into History. President Lincoln changed trains at Hanover Junction on his way to deliver his Gettysburg Address during the dedication of the National Cemetery there.

   No. 17 rolled out of [David] Kloke Locomotive Works, Elgin, IL, in May, 2013! The Reader Railroad in Arkansas built a matching wooden combine and a coach last summer. Fallen trees and limbs during a snow/ice storm prevented operations on President's Day weekend and took 3 weeks to clear.

   This train would make a fine GENERAL set!

Last weekend the Pere Marquette 1225 was scheduled to make her 1st long excursion since her rebuild.  Unfortunately there were some issues with the paperwork on a bridge and she could only run a shortened excursion.

I went up about 3pm to chase her running light from Owosso to Carland where she met her train and ran back to Owosso.

I had a great time chasing her and here are some shots of that day.

A tale of two X31s. Both built in 1934, but now it's 1956. One of them has gotten the brand new Shadow Keystone paint scheme, while the other has aged gracefully -the Pennsy still took pride in it's equipment back then! But it too will soon see the paint shop..

And after. Still well kept, but showing its age:

Are these MTH RailKing cars? They do not appear to be painted chocolate brown like Lionel's.

How nice are these Woodland Scenic houses?  Its twice as much as the MTH corner store I replaced, but its twice as big and so much more detail.  Check out the curtains and the weathering, and the different lighting.  This building is a winner.

Also received the UP B unit, passenger cars and replacement wheels.  All the engine wheels are hi-rail wheels now. The scale couplers mate up with the hi-rail couplers very nicely and have no problems if you use the longer #805 couplers.

Hi Folks,

My wife and I had a wonderful visit to Australia last month.  Here are some photos of "The Ghan" that I took in Alice Springs.  Alice Springs is in the center of Australia.  "The Ghan" runs from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north.  The distance is about 1,850 miles and the trip takes 2.5 days.  I would like to return to Australia someday to ride this train.

I intend to post more photos of Australian train adventures at some future date.

This a view of the town called Alice from a hill overlooking the town.  You can see the rail yard in the far distance.

The Ghan is a very long train.  I believe that this picture is looking south toward Adelaide and the next picture is from the same spot looking north toward Darwin.  I may have the directions reversed.

From the same spot looking in the opposite direction.

I am starting to work on a bridge for my layout that will be on the double-track mainline curve that comes out of my Union Station.  I want a Midwestern bridge that has a curved prototype.  The real bridge is in Minneapolis and crosses the Mississippi River and used to lead into St. Paul's passenger station.

I am starting by trying different cardboard templates or mockups to decide what I like the looks of the best.  Here are two pictures of the real bridge and one of my first cardboard template.
