The four smallest Southern Pacific Daylight steam locomotives, each a 4-4-2, were numbered 3000 through 3004. Two were painted in Daylight colors and two were black. Mornings, they pulled Train No. 54, the Sacramento Daylight. The route was the flat San Joaquin Valley floor from Sacramento to Lathrop. At Lathrop, the five passenger cars were detached, then added to the San Joaquin Daylight, Train No. 52, heading to Los Angeles. The afternoon was spent on a layover waiting in Tracy for Train No. 51 from Los Angeles to arrive. After the passenger cars were added in Lathrop, Train No. 53 was a return trip to the capital city, arriving that evening at six pm.
