I got to spend a little extra time working this week on the Standard/O-Gauge tinplate layout I am building in the basement of the VMT (Roanoke Valley Model Railroad Club).

Here's a view of three structures ready for installation on my layout. From left to right is an Ameritown building with a door substituted for one of the windows. Next is an old Walthers structure taken out of the box after many years and painted and assembled. To the right is a River Leaf Models version of a G. C. Murphy's 5&10. In all cases, I just used the front inch of so of each structure to create more of a building flat. Simple interiors and lighting are included. The structures have all been weathered, and the brick has been mortared with Roberts Mortar Mix. All structures are lit with LEDs. The khaki colored base on which they are sitting is just a piece of plywood and is not part of the finished model.  The photo here was taken in my workshop prior to installing the structures on the layout.

Looking in the archives...

In honor of my father who recently had a health scare but is making a recovery.  I would be lying if we thought he would still be with us a month ago.  This is the layout I grew up with.  Oversized lead people, out of scale cars, and things that just didn't make sense.  No DCS, TMCC, or anything else.  Move handle up, go faster.  Pull down, go slower.  The ones that started it all for me and my brother.

I'm the little guy at the right top side of the layout.

A little more recent, maybe 15-20 years ago...

My brother is keeping his trains safe and sound.

Been a while since I've posted any new photos.   Been a busy couple of months.  I had to take my old layout down when we had a new baby this past May, as we needed the larger spare room. My wife was kind enough to let me use the office room to put up a new layout in. I've been planning these last few months and this is what I've come up it. Definitely wanted to stick to traditional style trains, due to the small size of the layout. Also, wanted to stick with all postwar. I've decided to approach this one a bit differently. Rather than do another PW style display layout, I wanted to tackle this from a new perspective.

1- Use early (45-55) postwar trains & accessories
2 - Use traditional Lionel PW accessories (45-55) & plasticville structures, but realistic scenery & ballast - reminiscent of the photos in the early postwar catalogs done by Diorama Studios & the 1949 showroom layout.
3- Don't overcrowd the layout
4- Have some operating accessories to entertain the kids ( I let them pick which ones to include)
5 - Try to have the layout done by Christmas.

Here's what I have so far . Track /Roadbed are down.  Additional ties have been cut.  Trains are running.

Next up is to wire all the accessories that require insulated tracks & then I can start some ballast!  Also hang a few more wall shelves this weekend.

my wife's boss gave her this 919L tunnel to give to me. It was his Dads. Had to re-wire the light but it works great. Was going to go w/ an realistic looking tunnel, but I think this fits in well & I had to use it :)

Marty, those layouts remind me of when I grew up as well, as I am sure many of us here can attest to!

Christopher, the new layout looks great!  Interesting track plan, and nice clean look and colors.   I am looking forward to seeing photo updates of it often!

Thanks! I based it on a few old late 40's Lionel track plans but had to make a few changes to fit the room.

Some may remember my earlier post about the nice outdoor RR at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. Several of us from a couple of local clubs are working there this summer to operate the layout through Labor Day. I'm on Tuesdays and this week shortly after opening the gate I was startled to see a hawk swoop in and land inside one of the large trestles and smack dab on the track about 10' from where I was standing talking with a lady. Don't think I've ever been that close to a wild hawk.

I had just put my phone on the charger in the shed and was hesitant to leave the scene as not to frighten off our special guest. He remained for 20 - 30 seconds so I took a chance and ran over to get some photos for you guys. Was able to catch 6 or 7 before the NYC Geep came along and he took off at low level for the bushes about 75 yards away. All this with several guests in close range!  He was beautiful...

That is some consist!!!!!! Wow that bad boy pulls. I love the looks of 3rd rail models. How do they compare to LIONEL/MTH in operation as far as sounds, speed control and smoke? I know they have lionels older system, do they operate smooth and trouble free? are they as much fun to operate as legacy? how is their smoke output compared to lionel and mth?
