It's time for WEEKEND PHOTO FUN!

This spot on the tinplate layout has bothered me for a while. It's where my tunnel was before the expansion.

I visited T&K Trains in Bridgeport, Ohio this past week. They had a nice layout in the center of their store.

FANTASY model?

After I bought this car, I was unable to find a real life 50’ ACF photo. I wanted a blue & silver version. It may be a FANTASY model! 860595? All the outdated Lionel Standard O modern cars also contain incorrect Bettendorf Trucks as well. The doors are also incorrect. It appears to be another cookie cutter cost saving car offered by Lionel You can retrofit MTH Roller Bearing Trucks to it to match the modern car era.  A larger hole in the body needs to be drilled. The car was missing a date, so I added a date of 11-66 found on the blue – silver 86-foot auto cars.

Looks better, just not accurate.

B-15 Mogul #1455 and GP7 #1562 ran on the Boston & Maine Railroad during the steam-to-diesel transition years in the 1950s, so I run them together on my 12’-by-8’ layout. First photo shows the engines crossing a truss bridge on the layout. Second photo shows them at the North end of the layout near the 30-inch by 14-inch addition on which I’m currently working.

Off to a good start this Friday.  Steve the car looks terrific, I really like what you did and the load that you put in it.  Great work as usual.  Wife  tested positive a week ago so I'm laying low and getting my work room cleaned and straightened up, unfortunately, no going down to the club and running trains.  I feel great, taking all the precautions.  Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Best of luck to you and the wife, JEM. Glad you made it through the first week with no symptoms.

Over the past few months, I’ve been posting photos of the model I’ve been building of the Pennsylvania Glass Sand plant near Mapleton PA. I’m happy to report that I finished the model and the surrounding part of the area last week. So I am finally able to post some overall photos of the finished scene. It is built on a triangular plot in a corner of the layout, and I’m posting three pictures of the scene from all three sides. Finally, there is a photo of the prototype plant. There was no way I could model the entire plant, so I used selective compression to try to capture the flavor of the prototype. You can judge for yourself whether or not I’ve accomplished that goal.

Well, now it’s on to model Jacks Narrows not far from Pennsylvania Glass Sand.

I have a second post these week of a newly acquired engine. A few years ago, Lionel released a pair of Penn Central GP-30’s, one in the typical all white PC paint scheme, and one with a red “P” as used in the early daze of Penn Central. Recently, I came across a promotion for a limited production Lionel PC GP-30 marketed by Mr. Muffin’s trains. As my son pointed out, it differed from the other two units in that it lacked the words “Penn Central” on the long hood. It is unit 2222, and is an accurate model of the prototype, a photo of which may be seen on page 34 of the book Penn Central Power. I immediately ordered one as I knew it would look great with the other two units, and would create a consist of three PC GP-30’s each with unique paint schemes as was seen so often on the prototype. The new unit arrived a few days ago, and I quickly assembled a consist with all three engines. The result was a truly unique AND prototypically correct model consist.

Here are four photos of the consist on my layout, the last two being taken on the curve right behind my model of the Pennsylvania Glass Sand plant of which I posted a write up and photos above. Hope you enjoy these photos of the Substandard Railroad of the World!

Neal - I have the both first run and I purchased both of the Mr. Muffin special run.  One other interesting item I noticed but have not been able to double check is the placement and style of the horn.  On Muffins special run they are different on each unit - I suspect as the prototype.  Also, radio antenna? above cab.

I've been mentioning "Waltburg" recently.  My nephew Eric actually named the 'town' that.  Here's a little history of how it grew.  I'll apologize up front that form some years the picture is not very good and for some years I need to post 2 or more.

Started in 1995 when I made a model of my parents' house (the big white one on the right)

1995 - PICT0038

1997 - Still only one residence but it gained a farm.  I built the barn out of Michael's bought "popsicle" sticks)

1997 - PICT0069

1998 - you can see the blinking billboard proclaiming Waltburg.  Actually Eric made that in 1995 but I don't have a image from then.

1998 - PICT0076

2000 Waltburg grew with the addition of my sister's house and my house.

2003 - waltburg got a new residence: my brother's house

2012 - (sorry but it'll take 4 shots to get it all in because they were in a long straight line (8' long) shown in the 4th image)

2013 added my son's house (the one with the brown roof in the front of the layout)

2017 - l know this looks like the one above - I liked this particular design so I used it this year again.

Finally got to finish this project.

started with this.

C4DABD58-B7C6-47DF-B7AE-0C4A8956B596

Intermediate step with only one set of chocks.

B203E51E-A6D3-4280-84C8-755BE356C0CC

And now this with all four sets of MTH "metal" chocks.

20007575-9662-47D7-A0EC-4E30CA93D159

Had to buy Humvee of flat for the extra two sets of chocks.  But now have an extra Green Came Humvee.  So don't sell off can mix or match the load.

edit: the Humvee on flat for parts.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, it is very much appreciated.  Peter, that is oh so cruel, showing running trains and I can't go run, mean, mean, mean.  Nah, just kidding, better half told me that it has been 10 days now since her first symptoms and she thinks that it might be alright for me to go run this Sunday, I'll look into it but not really sure that it will be safe just yet.  I still feel great, no symptoms, no fever, no nothing, (I'm probably jinxing myself by saying that).  Have a wonderful weekend guys.

Neal,

The model of the glass factory turned out wonderful and definitely captures the feel of the prototype. Nice work! I also purchased one of the PC GP30 units from Mr. Muffin(#2222). I haven't taken it out of the box yet.  Unfortunately I did not get the one with the red/orange P (#2246). I might have to see about that. The units look great on your layout.

Nice photos of the T&K layout. Anytime I go back to visit in my hometown I treat myself to a visit there. As a boy, my friend and I used to walk from nearby Martin's Ferry to that hobby shop when it was in the other location and then eventually to the new one. Was so happy when they moved to the new location because it was bigger and more stuff was visible. Not to mention the new layout.

What a cool shot Neal.

Joe,

Thanks for your nice comment. Was honestly just a "grab" shot taken on my cell phone. I telephotoed in a bit.

Dave,

Thanks for your comments as well. The prototype really didn't have that many red "P" units, and I felt the one I had from the first run was enough, so just got the all white PC 2222 unit to make a trio

I happen to catch #60 this morning while I was heading out to the post office. With all the crazy Ida damage around the state, I'm guessing they inspected the line Thursday or Friday. I know that the small bridge on 202 by the dealerships had some wood debris on the side of the road, would imagine there'd be a bit along some of the trackage.
