Nothing exciting for me to post, I did return home from a couple of days out of the office to a large box on the porch.  It was a very poorly packaged 1938 American Flyer passenger set with a 4615 loco and Vanderbilt tender.  Luckily for me these things were really built well and nothing was broken.  Hopefully, this weekend I'll be able to start work on this old beast and at least get the engine back in shape and running.  I plan to restore the cars, but that may have to wait until it warms up a bit outside for the painting part.  It's a balmy 18F today.  The train is pretty complete, just missing a pair of steps from one car and the tender coupler was broken off.  It also looks as those the reverse unit may have been pilfered at some point, I'll have to rectify that. Sorry for the poor picture quality.IMG_0364IMG_0365IMG_0366IMG_0367IMG_0368

Happy weekend everyone! For some of us Patriot fans it's a little more happy so there is now way I couldn't post this car!  Now let's see your tinplate!

Booo

ooops! I should have told Atlanta fans to look away before reading this post!

Congratulations Chris.  Best Super Bowl I have ever watched.  Its great to see the Great, Grand and Glorious Commissioner of the NFL eat humble pie.

I appreciate the work Chris...but something about those colors.....and I'm not an Atlanta fan either...hopefully the Black and Gold will be there next year.

got some painting done this week. still need the decals and I'll be adding lights. hope you guys like these. Thanks to Dennis Holler for the two silver cars.

One of the most popular JEP locomotive, the 240 streamlined. It had a long production time from 1935 to 1960 with many motor variations, auto or manual reverse, litho or painted and with or without smoke deflectors. Certainly one of the most comon JEP engine, it is a middle range model and production has been important and it is a fun model to collect with all those variations and not expensive also.

The two first models are post war and the others post 1945 to 1960.

Dave, those passenger cars look great!  Hopefully I can get my new AF passenger cars restored as quickly as you  did with yours!

Daniel, Thanks for posting, those engine's are interesting and I see several listed on ebay FR.  I'm still waiting for the first of the JEP and LR cars I have purchased to arrive, but at the same time I am trying to learn as much as I can and keep an active eye out in case I see anything I can't pass up.  I'm keeping an eye on a green LR BB0401 loco and a few coaches now as well as a few others.  We'll see, it is fun to try something new and learn about it.

As I have collected Pre War American Flyer equipment over the years I have been impressed with the way that Flyer adapted their designs for cars for both Wide and Narrow Gauge.  They frequently used the same colors too.  Here are some examples:

Tank Car

Lithographed Passenger cars

Enameled Box Cars

Enameled Narrow Gauge Passenger Cars

And lets add in an Enameled 14" Wide Gauge Passenger Car for comparison

Lumber Cars

And some color variations

Sent off an order for a decal set for my Lionel 601 refurb project, but in the meantime picked up this roughly 1/48 scale tinplate biplane at Hobby Lobby:

Should look sharp dragging an Ives banner behind it...

PD,

I just checked Hobby Lobby's website and this plane and two other styles are on sale for $5.00 a piece.  Could you post a photo of the plane and a Flyer car together as a size comparison?  Thanks.  You could have an airshow on your layout for not very much money.

Greg

Here you go Greg...biplane, Flyer 3207 and a Dinky 23G:

In the brick-and-mortar store this was the only version I found on the shelf (they had a few of them in stock). It came with RAF roundels affixed to the upper wing, but those were easy to peel off for a more civilian-look.

I have a set of AF Lines Air Service decals around here somewhere...I was thinking a pair of those might look appropriate on the fuselage.

PD,

Very nice.  Thank you.  I'd say that is close enough for tinplate. I placed an order for several of them. The Air Service decals are a good idea.  I will have to look for some of them.

Mini Yellow Metal Biplane

I just went back and checked the website to post some photos of the other metal planes and this is the only one left.  I ordered mine last night.  I wonder if I got the last of the other models?  We'll have to wait and see.

PS

These are the other two models that I ordered.  I found the photos on my order confirmation.

Hi Gang

Here's the report from Sanibel/Ft Myers FL..  They actually had a train show in Ft Myers last weekend.  It was a lot of fun, but not surprisingly there was little for "true" collectors, and nothing from the UK or the continent.  Beggars can't be choosy however, and I came away with this interesting Dorfan UP boxcar complete with brake wheel, but no journal boxes or automatic couplers.  It is my first Dorfan boxcar. They made 2 others -- NYC and PRR in O Gauge and a total of 10 freight cars. I 'm only interested in the boxcars, so we'll see when I find the two others.

Picked up this closed spoke Marx 999 back in December at a local train show. The wheels were locked up but the motor hummed when power was applied. Took some time today to tear it down and see what was the matter. After some cleaning and lubing and a little "massage therapy" she began to loosen up and run pretty smoothly.20170211_204009

Thanks for the info guys. I've seen these in my area at closer to Standard Gauge and had ideas for a flatcar load. (with a little surgery) I hadn't seen them in O 'tinscale' yet.

Here's some colorful 0 gauge from Hornby.

The Danish company Pionér Expressen made in the fifties some colorful tinplate clockwork trains in 0 gauge that looked a lot like Hornby; they also used a coupling resembling the Hornby automatic coupling. When I bought the tank car I first thought it was Hornby but it is clearly marked Pioner Expressen from Danmark:
