Lets see your Tinplate!

A couple of things...first, a ratbag Ives boxcar found in a local antique mall:
Then, we fulfilled a long-held objective and got the Lionel 33/35/36 set running around the tree:
A late-production 33, from ~ 1925-1926...runs like a champ, despite a chunk missing from a drive wheel and a few teeth missing from the pinion gear.
Hope everyone has a great holiday!

I like that rat bag Ives car!
I've fixed a few damaged drive wheel flanges with JB Weld.
Two JEP sets from the thirties. One with the salt box locomotive is a high voltage but it also run very well with 20 volts transformer.
The second one is from 1935 and contains the classic Fléchette steam loco.
Now we can imagine those sets have been Christmas gifts unfortunatety toy train memorie has been lost and they do not speak ....
Have a great tinplate weekend and Merry Christmas everybody. Daniel

I really like elevated railways. A friend in Germany sent me photos of an 0 gauge home-made tinplate elevated line. His description: "The station roof was vegetable tin cans in their first life ....The posts are self made as well - brass tubes with a cast around ...."

Two weeks ago I found this Sakai Hudson & Pacific train; it had the loco, tanker, boxcar and caboose; I already had the gondola and a caboose (in better condition), so now it is a complete train. I think I will respray de loco but further it looks good (and runs good).

Had a rough week? Lots of bumps and potholes on the journey from Monday to Friday morning? No worries, the weekend is coming up fast and no matter how you look at it or which way you are going it looks like it is going to be a fast, smooth, streamlined ride into the tinplate weekend. (Marx, American Flyer, Hoge, Western Coil and Electric).

Thanks you Art, Merry Christmas to you and take care, Daniel
Jim Kelly-Evans... I also love Elevated tracks. Although dealing only with windups, I find it hard to run them on EL's without them falling off the rails!! ha! (Electric might work better)
Daniel... French trains have such a distinct design. They're beautiful to look at also.
Merry Christmas everyone!! - Ariel

Nice pictures Ariel, well diplayed models and it must be fun to run them.
I like to see those pure tinplate models in action even if sometime a derailment may happen and do some damage....
Daniel
Unfortunately JEP has never produced a Mallet Challenger loco, I think it was only to geave the illusion that when buying their trains you where going to have a very large engine ... the model in the box is really small compare to a Challenger which has never been used in France.

Ariel - Reminds me of this shot of NYC elevated in 1895:
Great stuff!

Hey Tinplaters...I was glad to pick up my first ever 2 Dorfan Cars at the recent Toy & Train Show in White Plains, NY. If ratbag is a category, I think the PRR boxcar may fit in:
Still, there is something to be said for original paint and lettering, brake handles and couplers.

Nice cars Tom! I’d love to find that simple orange Dorfan electric windup set one day. Because its lightweight, it’d run great on an EL track!
PD, I completely get my inspiration from jazz-era NYC or Chicago skylines (Funny you brought that photo up!) I love coming up with new building designs using old Bilt EZ and Richter Anchor blocks. And the idea of these with elevated trains adds a great sense of drama and entertainment!
I think I am the king of "Ratbag" most of my collection has "Character "
Being Christmas it calls for something Red ...
Why would you restore something that had so much fun in its life LOL!
Frankly, I prefer well-worn examples. When I first got started in this I wanted all my stuff as pristine as possible, but now I have come to appreciate every nick and scratch...most likely some kid left those after many years of play, and that's okay by me. That said, some pieces just have to get a bit of refurbishment, and I'm okay with that too.
That Ives car looks far better in the photo than in person. I've never disassembled an Ives piece (not much disassembly would be required here...the thing is nearly falling to pieces when you pick it up) but this may be my first. I have a 'ratbag' 3251 to go with it, lol. I'll put pics of that up next week.

I don't think I've ever seen one of those Fatman...no way I'd be 'restoring' that. Do you know what the number is on that loco?

One of our good mates here on the tinplate forum passed a few years back, but he left us quite a few bits to remember him by:

Especially poignant this time of year.

@pd I believe it is a 1935-7 1511 loco ... here is the other side
And Underneath ..
As you can see it has the Whistle unit (which could make it a 1508? the same as the Mickey Mouse but I believe they had a bell not a whistle?)
Any experts want to chime in lol , I see conflicting info all over the place, but I have called it a 1511 for now unless corrected
And yep again , sourced here locally in Australia ... how these things find there way here is a mystery lol ... I knew it was a fairly rare beasty and jumped on it
Thanks everyone for your posts.
They do bring a lifetime of happiness

Was there actual a toy model made of this Challenger-esque locomotive? If so I’d love to know more about it?
I assume the locomotive on the box is not a Challenger but an (Erie or Virginian) Triplex locomotive. The same box was even used by JEP for smaller clockwork sets like this one:

Maybe it is more an artistic representation of a "big American locomotive" than something else; it seems to be a 2 8 6 ..... and the rest is lost in the drawing....
Very best, Daniel
Wow. That was fun to go through. Some really interesting stuff. I like it!

I found this on YouTube, a video from Tom McComas...I had the VHS tape at one point. At 8 minutes or so in is Phil Ambrose's song, A Lionel Christmas. Very nice song, highly recommend if you never saw/heard it!
Tom
watched this again just last night while I was tinkering on the platform
Found a lot of interesting trains in the last time.
Early Bing side tipping car 14197 from 1906
Bing watchmans house 10/6190 from 1930 (not complete)
Bing UK Signal 13903 from 1906 in box
Bing 3 french cars
Small station made by Heinrich Fischer in the 20s
Brimtoy set 400/5 from 1935
For the friends of elevated railways here a short update, my railway station is on work.

Kibri strikes again
I hadn't realized Kibri made a full size postwar goods shed with crane until I found this at a TCA show last Sunday. I put it on the layout and moved my Bing station back to the cabinets. Here are the results. Also, note the New Year's card my good friend Dirk Hertel produced from a photo of one of my large Kibri stations.

This week I redid a couple of items from the junk box I bought recently.
Dumped i here you can see a Noma street light, there were 4, and an American Flyer water tower.
I repainted and rewired the Noma lights.
The bulbs I have are too small but I'll fix that with my next parts order to Jeff Kane.
I also repainted the Flyer water tower.

Surely you mean the Northern Star--Etoile du Nord. Perhaps you were thinking about the Golden Arrow.
Lew
Thanks Lew, a little lack of attention..... I also tested a Jep Golden Arrow.
All my best wishes, Daniel
