Went to Cumberland to take the Western MD Scenic RR trip with my Dad.  What a wonderful trip.  This was a birthday present for him, from several months ago, we finally were able to schedule it for Sunday Oct. 13.  Trees were just starting to turn, made for a great tour.

This photo came out rather funny, using the "panorama" feature on my phone:

Hopefully, if I did this right, below is a video of the engine being turned around on the turntable:

Thought you guys would get a kick out of this.  We sure did.

Cheers,

John

Chris I want to do the Santa theme too.  I wish I could tell you more.  The destination of Frostburg is quaint, but we only had one hour before the whistle blew to call us back, so we didn't get to see very much.

There are plenty of places to eat.  Frostburg is a college town, so there's a reasonable economy with things to see.  I wish there was a way to spend more time there.  I didn't think to ask if we could ride the early train up, and then ride the evening train back.  If that's possible, it would give you a few more hours to play with.

You can travel one way and bike back to Cumberland on the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail that shares the right-of-way.  The fee is the same and includes your bike stowed in the baggage car.  My grandson and I did this a year ago.

Also note that Wilderness Voyagers (6) day bike trip to DC from Pittsburgh, the second night stay is at the Gunter Hotel, main street Frostburg.
Morning Day 3 of the ride.  Longest day, all downhill to Cumberland. We ate lunch at the Paw Paw Tunnel on the C&O Canal Path trail.

Hike or bike north on the trail from Frostburg to the Borden tunnel, and the Big Savage tunnel. A little further past the Big Savage tunnel is an Eastern Continental divide.

well, I do bike, but it will be November when we go this year!  a little cold then...  But it sounds like I can do a lot around that area.   Ill call them to see if we can do that ride to frostburg morning and then back on an evening trip.  ill have to see if they do that.  thanks John and thanks others for the pics and suggestions.

I'm probably not the first one to mention this on here, but has anyone been to the nearby Georges Creek RR in Luke?  The owner, one Gerald Altizer, has been reconstructing a representative of the WM diesel roster with at least one loco from each class.  Currently he has an FA, SD40, SD35, 2 GP9s, and possibly a couple others now that were all owned by the Wild Mary and are or will be painted to reflect.  Definitely a must see!
