I thought I would try my hand at solid modeling and 3D printing, using Sketchup for the design and Shapeways.com for the printing. No one up to this point that I know of has attempted to build the 15000-series Pullman-built boxcars built for the Western Pacific in 1916-17, at least in O scale. Lots of trial and error on my part, but with the help of Jack Burgess and Youtube, my first effort is coming together. Still a lot of parts to add in the real world, such as styrene angle to complete the "zee' bracing, and an underframe from one of the old Atlas boxcars. Many of these cars were later turned into cabooses and outfit cars by the railroad, so lots of interesting modeling lies ahead.

Your 3D modeling is most impressive. Did you have Shapeways print all the parts or did you make a mold and pour resin for the second side and end.

Yeah - me too! Very nice! This is the first photo of a 3D printed model that has impressed me.
Simply awesome! Please let us know if these will be available for purchase.

The sides, ends and doors were printed at that point I took a cast and poured them in urethane. The roof is styrene and various details are from Grandt Line.
Very nice indeed!

I really enjoyed your Tidewater Southern locomotive build on Shawn'S website. You picked a fascinating prototype.

Where was that posted - web site address?
Thanks, Gene!
I have had a wood body steeple cab project pending in the queue for my column that I may or not get to this decade, and I also really like the smaller steeple cabs....
