Lionel's 28069 Century Club II NYC Niagara has long been on my wish list to pull my K-Line 21" 1948 20th Century Limited. Finding one on the internet priced right and that no one had already beaten me to was proving difficult.
Then came the latest issue of the TCA National Headquarters News. I'm always sure to scrutinize the listings in the back for items I want but that too was fruitless most of the time. This time around however, there it was. The Lionel Niagara like new in the box and priced very, very reasonably. I flipped to the very back to get the seller's contact info and wouldn't you know it, the guy lives 2 minutes away from me. Of all the places in the world he could have been and of all the items he could have been selling, it was exactly the one I wanted in the condition I wanted at the price I wanted to pay and right in my obscure sleepy retirement town. He even has the factory matching Century Club II display case that he threw in for a couple extra bucks. I will be picking everything up tomorrow and will have some photos to share and surely a new friend by the end of the day.
All that I could say was jeez, what a small world we live in. If you have similar experiences, share them here!
I have to ask if he threw in the display case for just a couple of bucks, then why this thread? https://ogrforum.com/t...club-ii-display-case
Fantastic find - and good luck with it. I am sure you will enjoy it (and the two display cases ), Particularly with those 21" 20th Limited cars, it will be a very impressive looking train.
VaGolfer,
That is a display case for a different engine, the ESE Hudson.
Nick good find. I have a Niagara, and matching Milk Car set on layaway at my LHS.

Years ago I was watching an item on eBay where the location was listed as "Northeast U.S." I end up winning the auction -- for an engine I can't quite recall -- and when I received the invoice, the seller was one of these eBay "consignment shops" (since closed) that was about a mile away from my home in northern N.J.! The owner was an anonymous guy who lives, or lived, in town, but I was unsuccessful in trying to contact him to compare train notes, so to speak. But I did get to save on the shipping by picking up the engine in person.

Nick,
Congratulations - a great find in an unexpected place.
Recently, the hobby shop where I work part time in upstate New York was offered a complete 1954 Lionel Berkshire set by a gentleman who walked in off the street.
As we talked, it turned out he and the trains were originally from the south Bronx in the St. Anne's area of Mott Haven.
Just so happens that my original 1951 Berkshire set I had as a kid was given away sometime in the late 50s by my mother (decided I was too old then for trains) to a cousin who lived one block away from this man.
While not the same set, it was still amazing to come across so similar a set that probably was played with at the same time as mine only a hundred yards away!
....of course, if it had actually turned out to be my old set - then - see the Holy Grail thread currently on the forum!!!

That is a great locomotive. I have the MTH and have been looking for the Lionel. I would bet Lionel could make a lot of money if they did that one in Legacy.
Nick, you should enjoy that one as it runs great. I wish you good luck with it.
