HELP!

I had a similar issue and ended up viewing via the HTML listing, which is not as convenient, but lets you look at the pics for the items.

For myself, I am wondering if the company Lionel uses for the catalog is maybe blocked from where I am trying to view.   I have not had this problem with previous catalogs (except the recent starter set and the Flyer ones a few weeks back)

Here's the error I get:

Initially, the following caught my eye:

1) Red Baron/Snoopy airplane pylon

2) LIRR Trackmobile

3)PWC control tower

4) Maybe the skeleton log cars (need to check if they are new numbers) - though this is honestly less of  a priority since I was unable to get an acceptable replacement for a 2 truck shay with poor paint last fall.

5) The Lumber mill labeled for WSL perhaps

6) One of the TMCC equipped speeders (maybe)

7) Bethlehem Steel operating hopper car

There might have been a few other possible items, but I'm still thinking.

The BN PS2 hopper is tempting, as well as the 3-bay centerflow since it looks like they have correct paintschemes and roadnumbers.  Just wish they'd start making them with Kadee coupler mounting pads/holes.

Interesting regarding the Santa Fe, B&O & Southern Pacific Berks, wonder if they're made on new tooling or if they came from K-Line?

I think that's pretty cool that they came out with the scale autoracks, surprised that Atlas O hadn't done it yet since they already have the platform for it (their 89' flatcar).  Probably will wait until they come out before making a decision; they claimed their husky stacks were full scale as well but they aren't, at least from a length standpoint.  Equally surprised with the GP35; I wonder if the SP version will have the correct lighting package like MTH did on theirs?

After reviewing and studying the photos of the 89' auto rack cars I will lay odds that Lionel is using their new coupling system that they are using their new Milwaukee Road S-3 steam engines. This new system is used between the engine and tender which allows the engine and tender to be close on the straights and then as the engine goes into a turn it automatically allows more distance to come between the engine and tender. It's a pretty neat use of springs and slots under the cab of the engine.

Decisions, decisions!  Okay, I really want the Alton Limited Pacific and the ATSF Berkshire, but those are EXPENSIVE!!!!!!  But something that I might actually be able to order that I like would be the UP NW2 work train set, or the ATSF BNSF heritage SD70ACE.  Might pick up one of those 0-4-0's (either ATSF or UP) in the future.

Most likely I will not be buying anything. Fortunately or unfortunately, almost everything I might be interested in duplicates or overlaps something I already have. I might be interested in the Milwaukee Road F-units - but I have the older K-Line units with TMCC, and MSRP on a 3-unit set with two powered is 1200 bucks. No way I am spending that kind of money for the difference between TMCC and Legacy. Likewise the GP-35. I have a pair of Atlas GP-35's with EOB - I can't justify spending the kind of money we are talking about to move from EOB to Legacy. The Legacy Shays are really cool - but I already have redecorated a K-Line Shay for Milwaukee Road (yes, they had Shays), so for the little bit that I run my Shay, again it just doesn't justify the expenditure.

The Lima Berkshires might also be tempting - but the price takes your breath away, and I already have a couple of the K-Line originals, a demo and an SP version. Sure, the superior sound and smoke of the Legacy engine would be great to have, but one of the new ones would cost a lot more than I have in both K-Line engines. The price is hard to figure, when you consider that the engines use existing tooling. Maybe I got spoiled by the price of the Milwaukee Road S3 Northern. The huge price of the Berks must reflect the hand labor involved in attaching the tremendous amount of detail - the detail on my K-Line engines is exceeded in my collection only by the Weaver Milwaukee Road F6a Baltic and a couple of 3rd Rail engines.

I was seriously considering the '37 Buick inspection car in Milwaukee Road, until I read Lee's account of his three DOA's. Maybe when it hits the secondary market.

Lionel has produced a nice catalog this time, but I'm just as happy to save my money for something special. Maybe MTH will come out with another Milwaukee electric or a USRA heavy Mikado, or Weaver or  3rd Rail will do the heavy Mike or a K-class 2-6-2 Prairie. For the moment, I'm keeping my powder dry.

PRR Ball/Keystone double door round roof boxcar.

C&NW PS-1

I'm on the fence on the Erie and NKP PS-1s.  They're both roads whose cars would appear to be common on my Lackawanna layout, but the Erie car appears to have a black, not silver roof and the road number corresponds with a non-PS-1 boxcar.  The NKP car has the "R" with tail on the "Road" in the logo and I'm pretty sure that didn't appear on post WWII boxcars.  Nit-picky stuff to be sure, but it kinda matters.   I'm also overlooking the fact that the C&NW car should have riveted sides.  C'est la vie.  The NKP and Erie cars are moot to me if MTH offers their '37 AAR boxcars, with the correct Viking roofs and Kadee coupler pads, in the next catalog.

I must modify my initial prognostication of only ordering some telephone poles.  This morning I spotted something missed the first time through.  That is the Pennsy X31C Double-Door Round Tops 6-17735 and 6-17736.  Also will breakdown and order one, just one, of the way way way over-priced Tractor/Trailer sets (Pennsy).

Southwest Hi.. Please tell me more about the Milw Shays and share some pictures if you have them of the prototype and your K-Line redec.  Thanks.

Actually the price isn't all that bad considering the Lionel legacy berks i.e. the 1225 and 765 cost $150 MORE than these,  were still made with existing tooling, and have no where near the detail of the k line tooling. Lets not lose sight of the fact that k lines especially reasonable pricing on top of dumping stuff for rediculous blowouts probably contributed to their demise. I'm not advocating higher prices but one really needs to go back through lionels catalog archives to realize prices at least as far as locos is concerned have gone up little if at all,in many cases there is a trade off like the s3. The legacy k4s were $150 cheaper than their 2002 predecessors and the new legacy em1 is $200 LESS than it was 12 years ago.

The Cass 2-truck shay, for sure.  Other engines will depend on shipping dates.

Other for sure buys:  all the Peanuts stuff (I have been dreaming about a Snoopy vs. Red Baron pylon for years!  And I have suggested it to Lionel on many occasions.  ), the zombie cars, the mint car, the new PRR boxcars (they are different from the ones in the 2011v2 catalog), the Graves PS-1 boxcar, the PRR TOFC and the separate PRR truck & trailer and the PRR hopper 3-pack.

There is a ton of other stuff that is in the "maybe" category for now.

Why do I get the feeling the old adage, "Two wrongs don't make it right" comes into play here...

Maybe true, probably not a bad idea for traditional 3-rail considering their length.  Not that it would matter to me as I'd convert them to Kadee couplers if I bought them.

The self-adjusting drawbar concept is not actually new in model railroading; Kato for example has been using a similar concept (they call them Kinematic couplers) on their N scale Daylight and Amtrak Metroliner passenger car sets for a while now.

Here's a link to a picture showing an example:  http://www.katousa.com/N/Daylight/pics/Kbottom.jpg

I'm just sort of surprised it took this long before we started seeing that concept applied in O gauge, would have resolved a lot of past issues with operablity vs. asethetics.

Well, When I saw the C&O paint scheme I couldn't believe it!  That is the one paint scheme I have always wanted them to do, especially in a GP9.  When I was a young boy I would catch the local where I lived and they used a GP9 with that paint scheme most of the time.  The conductor would be coming out of the office across from the school as it was letting out.  I was in the 7th grade.  Then we would walk to the crossing and get on the engine.  They would stop and let me run my books up to my house and I would tell my mom I would be on the train while they switched cars.  Great memories!  Now I'm an engineer for Norfolk Southern.  A dream come true, and thanks Lionel for finally coming through!

Chris, I've had very bad results with the "early era inspection cars" if this is the model you are talking about:  the small 1940s Ford sedan type with a leading truck with four tiny spoked metal bogie wheels out front.  I'll admit it is solidly built and feels incredible: that's a lot of wiehgt for such a tiny vehicle!  But other than Lionel's lighted Fastrack bumpers, the inspection car is the worst Lionel product I have seen.

I had the Lionel version and returned it. I have not heard good things about that car. I first liked it because it was in B&M livery but now rethinking it I won't be buying another!

I have the latest version of FF running on Win7.  Also have the latest from Adobe.  Get the same error in IE.

Dave,

Thanks for the tip! I see I can get in OK thru HTML File too! Our Computers have something in common!Don't know.

Things I am glad to see made:

- Motor City Express -- 89' auto racks are over due in O

- CN Piggyback set -- unit trains are just cool!
- The Berks -- not sure how accurate they are to the roadnames, but they are nice looking!

- UP 4-12-2's -- now that's a lot of wheels!

- The Trackmobiles are kinda neat, but not @ $300

- GP35's -- if these are indeed feature fixed pilots, they will rock.

- The Zephyr idea is nice but I think these will be a hard sell since Atlas is offering the CZ cars with incredible detail for the same $$.

- The SD40-2's would be a home run if they had fixed pilots.

- The Centipede's look incredible but not $2200 incredible.

- Round roof boxcars -- these look nice -- not sure about how accurate they are but it's nice to see them offered.

- The piggybacks are nice and would look great mixed in with the CN set.  The tractor trailer sets are very pricey, IMO.

What I will buy:

- I'm eying the GP35s -- if they have fixed pilots, I'll probably pull the trigger

- Round Roof boxcars -- at least the PRR one with the large keystone logo

- Maybe one of the piggyback cars

I'm looking at the ALCOs really seriously, as I'm a hopeless ALCO nut. (I've made split-second U-Turns in the Morristown area when I heard the grade crossing bells sound so I could watch the M&E #18 or #19 go by.) I never liked the early TMCC ALCO sound on the older Lionel C-420s and the Atlas Alcos with TMCC, and I'm hoping that the sound will improve in the Legacy offering. My strategy will be to check out the RS-11s when they come out in April-May and if I'm impressed, order a string of C-420s - the LV yellowjackets. I'll be recreating the APOLLOs in my basement - wow!

Has anyone heard the latest Legacy ALCO soundset? I'd love to hear a recording or see a Youtube.

The plan was ... no purchases this year. I have more than I "need," and the family budget is tight.

However, here it is ... 1:30 am ... on this very unusual warm and rather humid April night (my thoughts and prayers to those in other areas of the country where this weather spurred tornadoes), and I've changed my mind. A few ice-cold Budweisers may have helped me decide.

As I slowly, but steadily, migrate to the PRR .... the PRR Flatcar with Piggyback Trailers, the PRR Tractor Trailer, and the PRR Offset Hopper 3-pack ... are too sharp to pass up. I just ordered them online, at an outstanding price, from a OGR advertiser.

I am also deciding between the Legacy Mikado, or the Legacy K4. I keep watching PghTrainFanatic's excellent videos .. they are both so nice. Another OGR advertiser has them at a really good price, I will be pulling the trigger soon. I do have to sell a thing or two, to be able to buy a new steam engine, though. Anyone want a Pere Marquette 0-8-0 NIB?

Jim

The Motor City auto carrier set, provided that the CSX SD80MAC can be swapped for a Grand Trunk SD80MAC.

The GTW ACF Center Flow Covered Hopper, unless MTH announces the Grand Trunk Western ACF CenterFlow 3-Bay Covered Hopper in the new catalog.

The GTW and CN P-S 60' Auto Parts Boxcars would be nice since I missed out on the Atlas O ACF 60' Box cars with similar schemes.

The G.N. and ATSF ACF Center Flow 3-bay covered hoppers are very appealing.

The Chicago & North Western SD40-2 Diesel locomotive body colors and graphics show might be the same or not on the finished product.

Andrew
