Gents,
I've been pondering this question in my head for a few months now....Where did the steam chest smoke effect go? Why didn't they include the feature on the 2012 legacy models? Was it ill reception/feedback to the feature in 2011? Was it just too expensive to include? Were catastrophic failures of the internal components occuring? Maybe not everyone thought it was a nice feature but I liked it **** of allot more than the whistle steam effect...Does anyone have any info on this? I'm curious to how this went down.....
PS: Since i have one of my EM-1 opened up...(plenty of internal space inside)....and I've been thinking like Dr. Frankenstein lately and would love to "kit bash" / "modify" the EM-1 so that it could have the steam chest effect at (4) different locations...how cool would that be?.....I'm going to open up my 2011 Texas class loco from last year (with the steam chest effect) and see how Lionel did it....the only questions I have.... is the main board the same board used as last year with the steam chest function/sound effect disabled somehow?, does the new board still have the actual steam chest sound effect sound module/controller installed? if not can the sound effect module/controller be installed on the new board?....I know that the texas class didn't have a separate fill hole for the steam chest effect so it shared the same reservoir as the stack's smoke unit...but it must have had a separate little fan to inject the smoke out of the steam chests on either side of the engine....I might be able to branch off of the second smoke unit that feeds the whistle steam effect and route smoke to the steam chests....I know that the Texas class had special steam chest with holes in the bottom where the smoke came out....hmmm...I guess I'll have to open her up!...I'll keep you guys posted to what I find.
PPS: Call me strange...but I've always been that type of guy that took things apart to see how they worked...
