AFAIK, it's still 50-1001 for the set, and 50-1003 for the TIU without the remote. I don't think there's a unique number for different versions, they only have the latest version, whatever that is, listed on the website.
There has to a way to tell when it was built. The 50-1001 Says in was delivered in 2000.

What is the software version that is coming on brand new TIU's currently being shipped? Is there any notation on the outside packaging to indicate the software version contained within? I have a v4.2 handheld that I got to use at the club, if I buy a new TIU for the home test loop, will I have to upgrade the handheld to work with it, and if so, will that upgrade be a problem in using it at the club, without upgrading the club equipment as well?

No way to tell what's on a TIU without powering it up. In your situation, you could also retrograde the software in the TIU, if it's 4.3, back to 4.2. Simple process.
