what is the Purpose of the " Hooks " at the Roof Level at each end of these
Antique AMERICAN FLYER Coaches
as well as is on the MTH Reproduction PRESIDENT SPECIAL Passenger Coaches ?

Don't they latch the roofs on?

yes they do
As mentioned above, they latch the roof in place. Pull both simultaneously and the roof will release and you can see how they function. Seems like a better way (screw a la Lionel?) could have been found without all the moving bits. They don’t always latch very positively.
