What's an Attractive Scent for Smoke...?

Another thing I have often wondered about is if JT's NADA smoke fluid is really just like say Premium Lionel smoke fluid....IE, regular smoke scent but no flavor.

And why is Lionel fairly adamant about not using anything but Premium Lionel smoke fluid, marketing or a real danger of damage or crisp-ing to the unit?

The JT NADA is "no scent" as in no scents added.  It definitely has a smell to it, like all other unscented smoke flavors - which I find most unpleasant. 

There are blends that smell good or at least don't smell like burnt oil.  Each person's nose is different. I wish there was a "no smell at all" as I'm sensitive to anything in the air.   I like JT's Christmas Berry - unprototypical as it is!

I do not believe there is any danger in using quality smoke fluids outside of the Lionel brand.  Never heard of any problems.  JT's didn't gain their popularity  damaging smoke units.

My favorite is MTH's Christmas Scent, it's all I use now. I have tried several scents in other brands and didn't care for them. Most were irritating to my nose or just didn't smell very good. The MTH Christmas has been the only one so far that was not irritating, to my nose anyway. I have never used any of Lionel's smoke fluid. 

I use the MTH fluid in all my engines, both Lionel and MTH. The engines were all purchased new in the last 5 years or so, since I got back in the hobby. No smoke fluid related problems with any of them so far.

My wife wants me to try Clove and Apple. Seems like it has to be a strong flavor to mask the base scent. Clove might do it.

I like vanilla.

My wife loves the smell of Clove Sensation, so I use that and get no complaints.

JTs eliminator smells lemon-y fresh and dissipates real fast. The other one that I dont mind is the candy cane/peppermint one. It also doesnt hang around long. 

I like Mega-Steam Hickory Wood in my Lionel smoking cabooses.

I originally bought what Mike Reagan was selling when he was on the forum over the Winter discussing how Mega-Steam prematurely degrades Lionel smoke units. Not long after that Lionel cataloged new, scented smoke fluid. I don't think that was a coincidence. 

I have a hard time believing that any brand of smoke fluid (Lionel Premium, Proto-Smoke or Mega-Steam) will have an adverse effect on any manufacturer's smoke units. All of them smoke adequately to me.

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with these Mega-Steam pleasant scents.

The reason there are so many scents is there are so many preferences.  Personally, I find the Maple Sugar and Cotton Candy scents repulsive.

I forgot about the Eliminator, I also like that one and also use it occasionally. That does have a good scent to it. 

I think a good pipe tobacco or cigar scent might be a good one, but the boss lady wants crisp linen.  YUK.

As a big camper, my favorite smoke scent campfire, and I often use it my Lionel burning switch tower, although it doesn't sound like your preference, but just sayin'...

I'm with gunrunner John. They'll keep making different scents as long as there are people to smell them 

Personally, I've been using cedar in my steam engines and fireplace in my diesels. I really enjoy both scents...and so does my wife. That makes it a double win!

I wish I could find a scent my wife would tolerate. About the closest I have come is the vanilla, but after 45 seconds it is "TURN THAT OFF!" I wish they had a sample pack, that didn't leave a scent residue.

My new MTH smokes like the furnace in Ralphie's basement...I wish I could run it!

Well, the Governor has legalized "Grass" for medicinal purposes.  How about a pole to see if marijuana scented smoke fluid would sell.  Just don't inhale....LOL

Coal....but my sense of smell isn't very good. To me that's what a steam engine "smells like".

My granddaughter wants pink smoke, but the closest I can find for her is candy/peppermint, and tell her to look really close.

I can say that I've tested Mega-Steam in a host of manufacturer's locomotives, if you've had stuff repaired or upgraded by me, it was tested with Mega-Steam.   FWIW, I use NADA for testing other folks stuff, specifically so I won't add an unwanted scent.  Personally, I like the spice scents like Clove Sensation or Cinnamon.

Coal smoke and Valve oil.    They are the only scents that bring back the smell of steam to me.   

I like the smell of JT's hot chocolate smoke fluid. I smelled the bacon  flavored one in the bottle, and I think it smells like those bacon-flavored Beggin' Strips for dogs. Just my opinion.

Candy cane, hot chocolate, and Cinnamon bun keeps the ladies around.

Jokes is; put a pinch behind the ear and you attract all the young ladies...

Grandpa's Pipe Smoke is my absolute favorite scent to date that Jeb has come up with.  It's a real winner.  Such a pleasant scent that brings back memories.

I alternate diesel & vanilla in Diesels and woodsmoke & vanilla in the steamers.  I may try pipe smoke eventually.
