I'm switching away from Lionel Smoke Fluid, and I'd like to know; which brand of smoke fluid makes the most smoke, and is safe to use in a Legacy steam locomotive? Thanks for your help.

Ahhhh, the monthly smoke fluid question.
Some of the best smoke fluids leave residue. Switch at the risk of your resistor.

I use Lionel. Why are you switching?

It doesn't seem to smoke very well, at least not with my Legacy H10.
I doubt it’s the fluid.
I don't own one Lionel that smokes as much as my worst MTH. Just my experience.
I use Mega-Steam in everything. Great product, no issues.

Are you using regular Lionel smoke fluid or Lionel PREMIUM smoke fluid. I have sound the Lionel Premium smoke fluid does extremely well in my Legacy steamers and diesels.
It also what Lionel recommends.
Good luck with your decision.

I have nothing but good things to say about Lionel premium fluid. These smoke units are thirsty, and with the thermistor protecting them from overheating they will not smoke well without enough fluid.
I thought mine was a poor smoker until I had it apart to lube the fan and found the wicking BONE DRY after I "thought" I was adding enough fluid.
The manual isn't kidding stating to add 20 drops at the intial fill and 10 when smoke lessens. while these smoke units are a bit smaller the reserviors are rather deep and will easily accomodate 20+ drops.
The good news is, the thermistor was doing a fine job of protecting the wicking.
After using alternatives combined with Lionels comments on warranty claims, residue from others non Lionel products, replacing more than my fair share of fans and batting I have returned to Lionel Premium Smoke, lots of scents, and MTH fluid. No issues at all since I returned to manufacturers products, can't say that alternative smoke fluids were the issues but sure seems that way. All in on MTH and Lionel Premium fluid.
