What's your grandchilds favourite Christmas train or rolling stock?

Connor, my eight year old grandson loved my Lionel Corporate Blue Comet Tinplate.  He was most displeased when I sold it and bought the big Berk Blue Comet.  

My grandson LOVES Thomas the tank engine but he also likes the Williams 746 J because I replaced the smoke unit with a Lionel fan driven unit and it smokes like crazy now, he loves the smoke!

It's a precious time in our lives to see our grandchildren enjoying our company.

 

Its a good little train with great features. 

We too added Frosty to our collection. We're yet to buy the other extra cars for it.

 

It has a strong smoke unit, chuffs really well.

 

CJ didn't take a liking to it as yet.

But in saying that our newly born grandson Elijah will appreciate it in 3 to 4 years.

 

Mate, I love building memories with the family and this is a great hobby that builds strong bonds.

so how's the big Berk working out?

 

This year we bought the Frosty the Snowman set with all the extra cars.  Our granddaughter loves to watch the Frosty Aquarium car.  She will lay on the floor                 and watch the scenes inside the car go round.  It reminds me of when I was young         and laid on the floor watching my first Lionel come around the curve and seeing all      the passengers in the cars as they went by.

 

 

I thought just us Flyer guys did this.

Did you do have any trouble with the conversion?

 

I jumped on this topic with interest even though we don't have grandchildren.  It seems everyone we know who are our age already have grandchildren.  Our grown daughters and my wife love the Polar Express, so I bought a used set from a Forum member last summer.  It was a big hit with the daughters.  Our son-in-law even said it was cool, and he is a die hard video gamer.

 

i want to point out my error when our girls were young.  I was modeling in N scale when the first daughter came along and I was in my mid 30s.  The girls didn't have interest in my prototypical tiny trains.  Then Thomas came on television, and they loved Him.  After switching to O gauge a few years ago, I noticed there is a plethora of whimsical fun trains available   in O gauge that one doesn't see much of in the smaller scales.  I intend to build a kid friendly layout in anticipation for the grandchildren to be.

Go for it Mark.  In the long run, everyone will have big fun, with lots of smiles.  Bob S.

Thanks Bob.  Yes, if I had been able to buy a Thomas way back then, the girls may have had a bigger interest.  I liked him too.  That was a cool layout they used to film those programs.

I swear my 6 year old grandson's favorite anything is something that hasn't been on the tracks more than 3 minutes .  It doesn't help that he's basically surrounded by locos in the train room.  Unfortunately Ben lives in San Jose and I live near Pittsburgh .  But when he does visit, he keeps me very busy swappin' out stuff every few minutes!  I will say the one car that he will ask for is a work caboose that has a welder with a flickering bright blue lighted cutting torch flame which seems to fascinate the little guy.  It does look very realistic.

a true example of my grandchildren.

 

my three year old grandson was asked if he liked puppies or kittens.  without hesitation, he answered "i like trains."

 

that about covers it.

Absolutely the Missile Boxcar and exploding car. I can't reload fast enough.

Actually, he likes "Cranky" aka the pre war gantry crane.

 

 

My four year old grandson loves Thomas with the remote along with Harold the helicopter expansion pack and the Polar express.

 

PS:  He thinks every black steam engine is a Polar Express.  Who am I to argue with him?

I noticed Lionel makes a Lionchief train in colors, Petshop theme or something else, presumably to interest little girls in the hobby.  Has anyone picked up one of those sets and had positive experiences with a daughter or granddaughter?

we also like James and Percy!!!

It is not a Christmas train, it is the gondola with the red and green candy kisses and the hopper with the Christmas M&Ms.

Gentlemen,

   My daughter Vanessa's favorite train was the PRR Green GG1 with all the Christmas Box Cars pulled behind it, no daddy I do not want a Pink Train, I like the dark Green one, she is close to 40 now, I seldom if ever get to see her.  Helping to raise her boy friends kids she asked about her trains this year, but did not have time to stop and pick them up before Christmas.  You gentlemen are very lucky to have grand children, enjoy every minute of your family.  Never take one day for granted.

Grandkids???? Geez, I don't have any yet. Maybe in a few years I'll resurrect this thread to answer the OP's question!   LOL

For our 7 year old grand daughter it's Thomas, followed by James for engines and just about any gondola that she can put her small people in and give them a ride around the layout.

I think our next "Thomas" related loco will be diesel.

 

 I would still get her one. ( or them ) She will think you are nuts but the smiles

would be worth it. Of course you might have to set it up for her

and show her how to run it....

She could then pass it down to her kids

My kids are 10,5 and 3 so..... It will be a while.
