Mark,

I have four of the Lionel Polar Railroad (PRR) cars that they released several years ago. They are;

  • 6-27274 Polar Railroad Wood-Sheathed Boxcar
  • 6-27263 Polar Railroad PS-1 Boxcar
  • 6-27872 Polar Railroad Hot Chocolate Milk Car (sheathed boxcar)
  • 6-27873 Polar Railroad Reindeer Stock Car

I know Lionel also produced at least two other PRR cars, a hot chocolate tank car and a two-bay hopper car. I don't have those car's item numbers though.

These are nice cars and all from it appears from their scale sized product lines.

One thing to watch for if buying a stock car is make sure it really has Reindeer with it as opposed to Cows!

I recall quite a thread at the time that car came out when a forum member found Cows in his car, and there may have been others confirming the same thing.  I have no idea if it was ever determined how widespread the issue was, but it's something to confirm before purchase.

I found the 5 year old thread here.  Some of the photo links don't work anymore, but the story is still there.

I can help somewhat here--I collect all the PE and PRR freight cars.  This is my inventory list, which I believe is up-to-date.  If it has an asterisk next to it, it hasn't come out yet. It includes Polar Railroad and Polar Express freight, as well as a couple of AF cars (I convert the trucks to O gauge).

As to what is and isn't scale, generally speaking all the PRR stuff all is, with the exception of the tank car.  Regardless, I'd have to let you decide by viewing pics online... I find that area to be pretty grey most of the time.  Sadly, I fear we've seen the last of the PRR line, as PE seems to be the new normal.

PRR coal hopper
PRR hot cocoa car
PRR I-12 caboose
PRR ps-1 boxcar
PRR ps-2 hopper
PRR ps-4 flatcar
PRR reindeer stock car
PRR round roof boxcar
PRR sheathed boxcar
PRR silver hopper
PRR tank car

AF wood reefer

PE 10th ann boxcar
PE 2005 toyfair boxcar
PE 3-bay hopper*
PE 52’ gondola*
PE aquarium car
PE bell mint car
PE depressed flat
PE diorama boxcar 1
PE diorama boxcar 2

To date, there has not been a Polar Railroad passenger car... I assume to avoid branding confusion with PE.

The K-4 is lovely, isn't it?  The PRR hot cocoa car, PRR ps-1 boxcar, PRR reindeer stock car*, PRR round roof boxcar, and PRR sheathed boxcar would all complement it nicely.

* watch out, there is a nearly identical PE version of the reindeer car.

Dave,

That's right, I forgot about the eight tiny bovine that also pulled Santa's sleigh. Let's see there was Bessie, Buttercup, um, Daisy, Darla, oh ah Gertie and Clarabelle, and Cocoa and Cookie. They don't get as much press as the reindeer do.

Mine did come with reindeer however.

Tom

You need cows for all that warm chocolate milk.

Good names for those cows, should do a thread just to establish their source ( the names might stick and become part of Lionel folk lore)

My wife collects most of the Polar Express and Polar Railroad items.  Here are some pics of her Polar Railroad engines and cars, and her Polar Express  & Trade Steam Freight Set (6-30184) from a few years back.  Items she has not been able to find: SD80MAC, I-12 Caboose and the coal hopper.  Her PS-2 boxcar came as #1220 not #1245 as in the catalog and on the website.

There is also one gondola with presents that is Pennsylvania but goes well with the rest of the Polar Railroad cars.

PE tank car* You may want to check on this one. I got one of these at York this year.

* Lionel lists this type of car as "Standard O Scale". The Gold PRR and Blue PE tank cars are identical, other than their paint schemes.

AMS, you truly have an impressive collection. I "borrowed" your list to address the OP question regarding scale cars. There are both scale, and traditional sized cars with Polar Express and Polar Railroad liveries. So, to zero in on scale-only you need to sort through the various cars.

In addition, there are Traditional sized "PRR" cars with the logo "Merry  Christmas from the Pennsy". They go very well with the scale cars, but are Pennsylvania. I have a the silver and gold scale ore cars that I run with my consist.

And finally, don't forget about the Legacy GP7 Polar Railroad diesel. That's the motive power I'm using (thanks Allan).
