There are so many different number series, and sizes of cars- what was sold with these when Lionel came out with them, and with the MTH repos.

Since a 408e is about the same size as my 402 I would say 200 series freight cars or McCoy freight cars. I am not sure of what passenger cars would look right.
200 series girls freight cars
200 series, okay. But actually have the O-scale 1990s Lionel girl's train, love the pink engine and tender but hate the freight car colors:/
400 series passenger cars are what MTH catalogued with it
Joeg
Carey. Do a google search. "Lionel 408 image" That will bring up photo's of your engine with different passenger cars that would have been paired with it. That should give you a better idea. Pink cars will probably be a little harder to come by if that's what your looking for but Part of the fun is in the hunt!
I couldn't find anything in the way of a pink coach. You might have a restoration &/or repaint ahead.
I have no idea what the modern version would be, or if it was done again, but I like the arched windows like on the 418,419,431,&490.
Ives & MTH Ives have the large arches painted on.
I saw a Lionel #18, I like those type a whole lot but I'm not sure what they came with.
thanks everyone for all the information. Looking to eventually get a complete set of freight cars 200 series in an assortment of colors, a couple of 418 passenger cars, and maybe a couple of state set passenger cars too.
Carey,
There is a set of pink passenger cars that goes with your 408 on the Bay; search on item 262459472616
I have the # info for Tim's suggestion recorded Carey, if it "disappears" just let me know.
Talk about "perfect", those are it IMHO.
Read the description...faded on one side due to sun exposure
It would still be an easier repaint requiring a thinner coat than if going over top of another color.
the 408 and the 402 are the same loco,408 has more trim and lights,,,,,,the 1st pink 408 and cars are the #10-1226 and cars 418 Set 10-5041 from 2005 vol 1, the 2nd pink set which is pink and marron are from 2011 #11-2019 and #11-40055,so any of the 418 series match, also the 408 was used with state cars,,,,and 200 freights ,hope this helps
If you are looking for what would have been an original Passenger setup, it would be the 412 (California), 413 (Colorado), 414 (Illinois), & 416 (New York) cars. The original paint schemes are "State Green" or "State Brown" with darker colored roof. The Freight side would be the 200 series of 211,212,213,214, 215, 216, & 217, as original issues.
try paint wrapping, spray it on peel it off

You are right those cars are a mess. Certainly need repainting.
Not interested in the pink cars, but thank you for looking it up for me just the same.
For a consist, I'm actually looking to create what I call a "Crayola crayon box", with each car being a different color. Std. Gauge came in so many fun colors, this way I can (practically) have them all

The 402 and 408 were sold in more passenger sets with 418 cars than "State Cars". The Mojave set and Apple Green set come to mind. The ultra rare Pink original set was 418 cars.
My book lists the 408 with Green "State Cars". That may be a ringer. My understanding was the 381 could not pull the 4th car so Green 408s were custom painted as a replacement.

One of cars in new production are difficult as most are sold in sets. Those pink cars if purchased at the right price would be perfect for a crayola repaint. Remember fading only no dents.

The numbers of the cars from above are 212, 214 and 418, 419 cars, so you can start to look.

Terry, wood blocks are holding this up as piers?
yes ,cut from 2x8 ,you could use 2x4 etc, I just happened to have the 2x8
Again, thank you all for your suggestions and encouragement in my ever growing excitement and enjoyment in Std. Gauge.
As Tom and I were both born and raised in California, and we both have always lived in California- I snagged both the brown and green repro Lionel California passenger cars from the State Sets for running with my 408E.
Snagged this TCA stock car to start a freight consist, also for the running behind the 408E. The colors looked very cool to me and unusual, compared to the others MTH and Lionel have reproduced.
Oh, Tom calls the Pink/Red 408E "Pepto", I call it "Pinkie".
