Whats the length of your streamline passenger cars for your steamers?..Because Im running 2 rail scale cars..2rail are more true to scale..Want to make some streamline passenger cars..seem that 24" long is more true to size for my 3rd rail PRR S1 Duplex.Im running some 18" and still doesn't look wright..Im running o72 track..

Depends on the car make and model. Some coaches are 85 feet long; some baggage cars are only 60-65 feet long. You'd need to look at a Pennsy passenger car roster for a particular train to figure out the number of cars, plus the lengths of the individual cars. Check with the PRR Historical Society as they might have a "passenger car" issue of one of their publications.
I've been researching the CNW "400" and ATSF consists for the same reason you are -- I want some scale-length, accurate cars to go with nice, scale passenger locomotives.
Hope this helps.
went to hobby lobby to get wood to make a roof for my reefer..got a 3"x 24"..laid it behind my tender and man it looks wright for length for a passenger car..This is the biggest/longest steam engine id ever owned..
Probably the cars that would fit the S2 best are prewar heavyweight pullman sleeper cars and P70FAR coaches offered by Golden Gate Depot. And GGD and/or WEAVER headend cars.
85' lightweight streamlined cars scale out to 21¼" long. It would not be unusual for prewar lightweight cars to be behind a S1 Duplex. On O72 track (36" radius) there will be substantial inside overhang at the middle of each car.
Pick up a copy of Al Stauffers "Pennsy Power III". There are all kinds of PRR passenger cars depicted/described there. When you find what you like/what is appropriate take the car length times 1/4" and you'll have your answer! You'll also have a great reference (PP III) that you can use again and again!

If you like long passenger cars, 21" is probably optimum. K-Line and 3rd Rail are probably best cost/value purchases. if you are using O-72 curves, you probably should be looking on a different forum for opinions. I find that 21" cars work better with radii twice that.
