I'm repositioning a couple items in my MTH engine. When disassembled I noticed this white stuff that I thought was corrosion but it's some type of grease. Some of it got wiped off. Anyone know exactly what it is and what the purpose is?

That’s not grease, that’s thermal paste. It helps the heat sink do its job by transmitting excess heat through the paste, into the surrounding metal.

Glad I asked! Thank you so much.
Harmonyards is correct. You need to replace it when you put the locomotive back together, otherwise you run the risk of overheating and burning out the board that mounts to it.
Yep, ….if you wiped it away, you’ll have to buy some from Jeff Bezos,….😁
