Chris, The one forum member who I’m pretty sure bought this set was Steve “Papa” Eastman. Hopefully he will weigh in with his comments and thoughts.
Hi Chris,
I bought one about two weeks ago. It is the dark grey version. It runs very smooth and can creep along at slow speeds. The paint and finish are flawless. I thought about one for a while and the thread discussing this set in the spring made me pull the trigger. Now I need to find some Marx army buildings and a place to run it.

Chris,
Here is a very long thread concerning this set - pro and con.

There is also a nice review in the latest (Nov.) CTT.
I own one with the extra ammunition car in dark gray and love it. The outfit (they called them outfits in those days) is a very good reproduction of a vintage toy train in the character of a vintage toy from the early 20th century. It runs very smoothly (in one direction). It would appear that the traditionalists very much appreciated that the No. 214 outfit (1) was made at all, and (2) was made the way it was made. Then, there are a few woebegone souls who wished for PS3.
Have fun!

I have the set (not sure what color it is since both colors look so much alike ). It's fine for what it is, but I still think it was overpriced--even at street prices--based on what you get for what you pay. I would not have minded the price so much if the locomotive had sounds features, but this baby is about as basic and no-frills as you can get.
I have one and it has not been run at present. This little set graces a shelf in my home office with my books on military history. Though pricy,I may be tempted to buy another one of these if it was offered in the correct color combo.

I bought the dark grey version when it first came out a couple of years ago. Last year I bought an add on ammunition car for it. I actually really like this set. It runs smoothly and looks great when it takes a curve if you slightly adjust the revolving turret. Looks like a battleship on rails. Personally, I'm glad it doesn't have sounds because I think as with all tinplate it works its magic without the extra noise. That of course is just my opinion. It was a tad pricey but I have always wanted one so I took the plunge and I don't regret it.
I have all "except for one piece I restored" new tinplate with all the bells and whistles. I do realize this is as simple as it gets but it is kind of an iconic piece and for some reason I can't take my eyes off it when I see one.
I like real well. Just for fun, I added LED's in both barrels. The excess noise is the wheels slipping because I had it anchored down for the video.

I was thinking about that myself but I wouldn't imagine you could move the turret that much. "I probably wouldn't anyway"
I have the first grey issue. I waited many years to finally get a repro since the originals are out of reach. I love it. Here it is on parade manuvers:
I have the gray one and I love it. Chris...You might like to know that Navy personnel manned these huge rail cannons in WWI.
Of course there is an original for sale now, but like I said, out of reach.
