For your enjoyment, I snapped a few photographs of the new armored motor car from MTH.  At first look I am impressed of its fit and finish.  As per original(?) it is a conventional motor with no reverse unit.  The gun turret can be rotated.  It is very much a darker shade of gray than the normal "tinplate gun metal gray".  I think the phillips head scews look odd, rather than the standard slotted screws.  All in all, a very nice set.

Thanks for posting these, Phil.  I’ve been looking forward to seeing this set, especially after all the yak here for the last several months. I did not preorder this one but wanted to wait and see what the final product looked like.  The other thing is I really like (and prefer) the olive green color that is, apparently, going to be used on the “2nd version” of the Armored Set to be released later. I may get that one.

It's not supposed to be, Eddie.  It's a repro, and likely not made of the same metals; not made with the same tooling; not painted with the same type of paint; and not powered by a motor made with the same make of components used in the original (armatures, brushes, etc.).  That being the case, "authentic" kind of loses its meaning.  It's just a neat little toy train for those who can't afford (or don't care to) an original in pristine condition, assuming one could even locate the item in such condition.

Eddie,

Better check out your sources for that statement.

Legitimate 203's, have been found and documented, with either a "Lionel Manufacturing Co." or a "Lionel Corporation" plate attached to the pickup insulating board. This is noted in McEntarfer's book on Lionel's Prewar Sets and Greenberg's Vol. II: 0 and 00 Gauges.

I picked up my Armored set today from Trains N' Things in Vineland, New Jersey.  I am very pleased with it.  It looks good and runs very smooth.  I really like the Battleship grey finish and I love the rotating gun turret.  It looks very cool  when you turn the turret off center when it goes into turns because it looks like a Battleship on rails.  Personally, I really am not too much bothered about how the pickup plate is stamped.

Your LHS should contact his distributor and see what's going on.  Those sets have shipped (obviously).  If he can't or won't help you out, go to the MTH dealer locator and order from someone else.  At least four dealers are currently listed there as having the item in stock.

However, I still haven't heard that mine has arrived. so anything is possible.

Not your mistake , I do believe the catalog ad mentioned it came with mechanical e unit

I don't recall it being mentioned one way or another.  I supposed it's a matter of just assuming, and you know how dangerous that can be!

Anyhow, I'll head over to Dave's place at some point in the near future to retrieve the set I ordered.  Have a number of other "things" to deal with locally this weekend, so it might have to wait until sometime next week.

For the record, neither catalog (2011 and 2012) in which the Armored Train Set has appeared mentioned anything about an E-unit. In fact, the catalog descriptions of this item contain very brief information on specs.

EDIT:  However, the description on the MTH Online Product Locator (for 11-6029) DOES indicate Mechanical E-Unit.  Go figure.

Could be that those of us who purchased the "earlier" 6025 set got short-changed.  If that's the case, it's kind of sad.  I looked at both catalog pictures again today, and one would be hard-pressed to distinguish a color difference in the advertised product (let along the presence of an E-unit or lack thereof).  If I had a choice--and I don't at this point--I would have gone for the green set with an E-unit (assuming it is so equipped).

Agreed. There seems to be quite a bit of confusion with this 2nd olive green version (11-6029) that suddenly showed up.  I didn't preorder either one, but will have to decide soon. Most of the dealers have a 5/25 cutoff to take advantage of early buy pricing on new LCT items.

My experience has been just because something is listed in the catalog (and/or on-line) doesn't mean it's correct.

When I purchased the first LMS passenger car set, it was advertised at 96" inches long for the 4 car set.  Since I knew the cars would only be 16-17" if prototypically correct, I sent MTH an e-mail asking for the actual car size.  I went back and forth with three seperate e-mails and MTH's only reply was that the catalog listed them at 96" long.  Turns out the cars were 66" for the 4 car set.

My guess is that the only way to know it the armour set will have an e-unit is to see what is actually delivered.

Probably just a copy and paste error.

I posted an inquiry on the MTH Facebook page.  Sometimes one can glean new or more accurate information that way.  Remember that I said "sometimes."

I asked if there were ANY differences, cosmetic or mechanical (E-unit, couplers, etc.), between the 11-6025-0 set and the 11-6029-0 set.

The answer I received--very quickly I might add--was "I believe it's just the color, Mr. Miller."

Interesting. Thanks for the update.
