When my Legacy controller is in the cradle of the legacy base unit getting charged, the back of the controller gets very warm. Is this normal or is there a problem? Also the base unit becomes somewhat warm. Thanks for any input or help.

It's normal. That's why a lot of us use turn off the charger and either use an external battery charger for the AA or just use Alkaline and replace them when needed. The 993 charger only would be an option if you could find one.
The heat is normal but most people I know just use alkaline batteries.
I use an external charger to re-charge the batteries. I also have extra rechargeable batteries. I don't want to risk damaging the CAB2, it does not go back in the Base2 charger. I had one of the batteries that came with the Cab2 finally become unusable. It got very hot during recharging. If it had been enclosed in the CAB2 during charging it could have started to melt the plastic.
Having extra batteries makes down time only a few seconds while switching batteries. Instead of waiting for the unit to recharge.
I use the separate charging base, however as Marty says, they're hard to find now.
