Correct.  The crew members had trouble seeing forward. The Challengers equipped with Wind Wings were almost as bad, but you could live with them.

Not I; the ears ruin the look of the loco but thanx for the info.

I like elephant ears and I've seen that picture before, but BBs with them were a one-time this-doesn't-work experiment, so I wouldn't do it.  

I do have them on my Challenger and one other loco but that is because those models came with them.

I think my Vision line challenger with smoke deflector shields extends further than the Big Boy around an 072 curve... if smoke deflectors are added to the big boy this could really tear up a layout!

I think I would be more inclined to change-out the front end in order to get rid of those cooling coils, and replace them with the "modern" front end arrangement.
