Good Day,
Who will be the 1st to offer Modern Day Commuter Train Sets? Offer the MPI MP36PH-3C separate. There are some striking color schemes running the rails in the 21st Century!

Probably no one. Lionel did their bit with the NJ transit sets a while back, I really don't like them. MTH did some as well, those were better. Even Atlas tried for a while. I suspect the sales just are not there for local commuter rail. I agree completely with taking matters into your own hands. That may be the way to go.
Somebody posted the DFW Trinity Railway Express cars, repainted K-line 21" bombardiers, on the 2-rail forum a while back.
Otherwise, I also see this as a niche interest that wouldn't motivate the manufacturers to try it again.
Lionel has offered two Metro North M7 commuter trains sets and one Long Island RR M7 sets since 2008. I'd love to see a retool into a very similar ConnDOT M8 set.
K-line did the Puget Sound Sounder set.

I have this MTH MBTA F40 and Atlas cars. It's not super modern. Just current day, close to retirement modern.
I would like to have one of these. But IMHO, there isn't any chance that a O scale manufacturer will make the tooling for it.
I believe that MTH has already done the three county commuter train used in South Florida known as "Tri-Rail" which consists of an F40PH pulling three or four Bombardier bi-level coaches. Does that count?

The engines and double decker passenger cars that K-Line did a few years ago are still modern enough current for me.
I have the Sounder set looks sharp similar to the locomotive and cars shown in the photo in the 2nd post above
Like Passenger Train Collector, I had to have a Railrunner. Albuquerque is only a relatively short trip from here, so I have ridden on it several times.
Between a friend who does custom decals and finding the K line loco and cars, in a quick six months I transformed them into my Railrunner.
Nice job as always Frank. I would go for the VRE version with the new bi level Kawasaki coaches built in Chicago area. It would have to be Atlas or Lionel to make them or possibly 3rd rail maybe
