Since the 611 is soon to return to Roanoke, VA.....what about a LioneChief Plus J, Lionel? The 746 tooling was used recently in both the Warhorse and 1959 Postwar Celebration sets. It would give a new generation of train enthusiasts a chance to obtain a Lionel copy of a steam engine they can actually see running again.

Good idea? Or, am I nuts?

Ron.........I cannot disagree with you....but Lionel has name recognition no other train company has, and I believe it would be a winner for them.....people who are new to trains, know the brand....

This is our modular group's unscientific experiment:

We have held 2raffles: 2013 &  2014.

In 2013, we raffled an MTH starter set and sold about 600 tickets.

In 2014, we raffled a Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer (a less feature-filled set) and sold around 1600.

As long as the Lion Chief + line keeps selling out, Lionel will keep adding more locomotive choices and incrementally raising the price. I would expect a J to be priced higher than the current offerings because of its connection to the rejuvenated 611.

After a few years, I'd expect more features, too as an enticement for early Lion Chief + purchasers to upgrade. We've seen this pattern with proto 1 -> 2 ->3, and with TMCC ->Legacy, and it will no doubt repeat as the technology evolves. That's actually a good outcome as those on budgets can pick up earlier generations inexpensively and those with larger budgets can hop on the latest models and sell their previous generations.

LionChief Plus has been very successful so I think Lionel will keep making different locomotives and adding features but will keep the LC+ line in the mid price range. They won't keep loading it up to the point that it will compete with Legacy. They seem to be committed to expanding the LC+ line and that's just fine with me.

I would personally much rather see a scale-sized or near-scale smaller LC+ steam loco such as a 2-8-0, 2-6-0, or more conventional ten wheeler. The upcoming camel back is very tempting, but camel backs were such odd locos and were only used on a few roads. Hopefully, we won't see the quality sacrificed to keep the price down. I currently have a Mikado, and I'm really fond of it.
