I will be purchasing the ZW-L next week from my LHS. So I was watching Mike's 30 Minute video on the new transformer. At one point he was explaining how to control the ZW-L through the TR and ENG commands. My question is why would anyone want to take up some of the 99 ENG spaces for controlling the transformer. This limits what you have left for your engines. Since I have already used 48 spaces for my engines this is a consern for me. Does the ENG section provide any advantage over the TR section and if so why?

My experience was when I first got the ZWL . I programmed it as a Tr1. 2 of the 4 ZWL channels on the Legacy remote would read Cab1. The other 2 channels would show the TMCC graph. Being that I wanted to run all 4 channels with the "speed graph" Their was no way to do this in the TR mode.
I then "tricked" the remote by programming the ZWL as Eng1 and then I could go to eng(channel) 2,3,4 and manually go through the menu and make it a TMCC eng and further into the menu XFRMR.
I then went back and reset the ZWL as a TR and all 4 Tracks(channels) now show the graph for voltage on the legacy remote.
Maybe that's why its recommended.
That being said I never did program any engines after that as eng1,2,3,4. So I don't know if that would effect my TR1,2,3,4 XFMR(transformer)
In theory im guessing if I did ,as long as I didn't make an MU in TR 1,2 ,3 or 4 I should be alright, but havnt tried it yet.
You have 99 ENG and originally only 15 TR's (of which only 10 could be accessed because of limits in the CAB-1). Original TMMC system consisted of the CAB-1 and the original PowerMasters. The first true TMCC/LionTech command reverse units did not appear for almost a year after the debut of the CAB-1/PM. PM's can only be addressed as TR's. All of the later power supplies (TPC, PWC ZW and the new ZW-L) allow you to access these devices as TR's or ENG's. If you had a number of "consists" you would run out of TR's very fast. TR's and accessories usually only run in CAB-1 mode while an ENG could run in CAB-1 or TMCC.
If you define the ZW-L as an engine then you can
build a lashup with Train Link and change control
of channel A,B,C,D on the ZW-L by pressing just one
of the buttons at the top of the Cab2.
Thanks everyone for your help with this. It looks like using the ENG is best. I will be purchasing the ZW-L tomorrow and set up this weekend. Sorry for the delay in my response I have been out of pocket for a while.
