I received my April meet notice yesterday and was wondering about the OGR gathering.  I may have missed the discussion but are y'all are still planning on getting together on Thursday evening or is it being moved to Friday?

This has pretty much been on the minds of everyone last year. I do know that the discussion I was part of was talking about all the other groups that gather for the nightlife as to when they will be held. Since I don't know half of the group events for the nightlife other than the OGR group and some of us who were at the Olive Garden on Friday last October, it's hard to say. I just remember the diner next door was packed as much as the OG and I believe one of the other places in the area.

@Putnam Division may have better insights to the other groups attending evening events, but the bottom line will be intercommunication between said groups. That was the concern. Can't be in 4 places at once if all the groups meet at the same time, and can't eat everything if attending two or three. Peter, do you remember what all the groups that have evening events?

Peter and I discussed this and I brought it to TCA  meeting at fall York. And we sent this email to Alan  for his thoughts .Here is the conversation hope this helps.

The Birthday party event was absolutely incredible....  Lots of pictures were taken and many members are posting on the forum about the event.  We are so grateful and appreciative for all that the NJHR did to make this happen!

We too discussed the changes that are going to take place.  First, we will continue to have the Friday 2p.m. OGR forum meeting.  That has always been our time and we intend to keep/defend it...LOL!!  The OGR dinner event at Quaker Steak will have to be moved to Friday evening.  We had a lot of complaints about the food there so we may look at some alternatives...but...it is a good location that most folks can find easily.  Any suggestions would be appreciated and considered...

Thanks!

Alan

Hi Alan.....(and Don)
it was great to see you both last week. It looks like the 50th birthday party was a spectacular event. I wish I could have been there.

Last Friday, I was talking to Don, and Don, you brought up an interesting point...... the fact that the two day format of York is going to change all the social events which have become so much a part of the three day meet.

Don was going to the Eastern division meeting on Saturday morning (unfortunately I missed this meeting, too....when I woke up at 3 AM.......I shaved and showered and got in the car and was home by 0715).

Bob Buehler, one of the board members of the TCA Eastern division and one of my friends in the River City 3 Railers, was there and told me that this was discussed at the meeting.
Don, I suspect you are the one who brought it up.

Anyway, I think that it's something that needs to be addressed because there is only a certain amount of time........I think OGR needs to stake its claim for one of the evenings.

It will be interesting to see what people are going to do for a 2 day event.  I suspect that the under two-hour crowd will be leaving to travel to York on Friday morning.  Those of us who have to travel a longer distance will likely be showing up Thursday afternoon.  However, as you know anything is possible.  It likely will just evolve for most people.

I have already decided to claim the Friday morning breakfast. I am banking on the fact that most people who travel a long distance will be staying in York Thursday night.I guess I will have it 0645-0830, which is probably plenty of time so that people can get to the Fairgrounds for the opening.

Thanks Don. This gets the conversation going in the right direction that's for sure. I knew things would be changing mainly because that was our Friday night at Olive Garden discussion.

As stated above some folks won't be around Thursday as they would be arriving Friday morning. So I guess this should be changed to OGR dinner Friday night. All other things will have to fall in behind breakfast and dinner.

Is this get together open to all forum members or just the ones that are TCA and attending the York meet? I no longer am TCA or attend that meet but would love to put a voice and a handshake to all the great folks on this great forum!

Rick, I am certainly not in the inside track but, No one was checking for TCA member cards or meet badges for that matter.  I for one would love to meet you, though I am not sure yet whether I will be able to attend the April meet at all at this point.

I will be missing this experience/experiment. And I will be missing York for the first time since 1993. We will be on a Mediterranean cruise. Three couples, so I needed to be date flexible. But I really am curious about how the 2 day event turns out. I hope it turns out well.

Gerry

Well Gerry, we'll miss you. I hope the cruise is great, we'll be sure to keep you posted on everything we can. Definitely be missing you at the NJ Hi-Railers table, hope you're there in the fall.

Rick, if you can make it to the dinner, great. You don't have to have a TCA membership to eat and drink with great train friends. Just be sure to say what your forum handle is when you pop in.

Gerry - sorry to hear you will miss York!  Enjoy the cruise!

Regardless of the night - I'll be there!

I realize from previous posts that it looks like it may be moved to Friday night, but I'd swear it was always Thursday night when the meet used to be two days.

As for complaints on the current location - folks will complain no matter where it's held.  I'd just ignore the complaints.

I want to go on record as voting for keeping it on Thursday night.    Anyone who has to travel any distance and is planning on attending the meet only on Friday will most likely stay overnight on Thursday and not want to have a few drinks on Friday night and then have to drive many hours at night to get home.  Even without the drinks it would be a tough ride after walking around York from 9-5

My two cents!

You know what hasn't been considered? Set up time that Alan, Allan, Jim, Ed & company have to do. If the OGR staff is travelling all this way, and has set up to do, they surely would be tuckered out like anyone else in this situation. I would imagine that is why in Don's post above Alan said Friday.

The thing is that people could go Thursday, but chances are they won't be there. So this would mean that the group would be split up between those voting to go Thursday and those who go Friday. Granted we are still a ways away, but I imagine Friday will still be the day.

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately the LCCA will not be having a get together this APRIL.

We hope to have it next October. We will be in the Orange Hall same location in section KK.

Bummer nothing against the OGR get-together, but the food is better at Smokey Bones!

The “Thursday at Friday’s “ dinner has always been on Thursday night, long before the Meet added the Thursday opening.

Also, it was not an OGR Magazine event originally.  It originally started with a few forum members meeting there after the halls closed. The first time I attended there were maybe 25 forum people there. As the word got out before subsequent Meets more and more people were showing up. The OGR crew also started attending and hitched their wagon to the dinner/event and hung a banner where we gathered. It was always so cool, but it was the forum members who began it all. In fact, as you read in other threads as well as this one, some forum members meet at several different dining establishments in the York area. And Dave, as you remember, we had a Friday night gathering too

Its a week long party!!

The Thursday or Friday thing in April won't really be a consideration as far as the OGR Publishing Co. team is concerned because we will not have a formal presence at the April York Meet. We do plan to attend in October, but as far as I know, the only staff person who may be attending in April is Ed. He was at the past April Meet, as was I, but I am not planning to attend this time around. Our whole team (the Good Lord willing) is planning to be there in October with our usual booth setup.

Okay, thanks Allan for answering the big question. Also, thanks Brian for the good history lesson. I really need to get clued in on everything. Cheers

So guys, it is up to a vote for April I guess. Might want to see if Ed has any time to join us for whatever night is decided.

I'm fine with either date.

Guys.....I also learned some good info here!  I didn't realize the history of the "OGR" dinner....and didn't know that it was not an OGR event originally.  As the email Don shared above, I was asked to make a decision on what day the get together would be and after various reasons and considerations, I felt that Friday night might be best as the OGR crew would be able to attend since some of us would be setting up and others might not arrive at York until Friday.  I assure you that I am not trying to change a tradition by changing the night the event takes place....

Brian, when are you coming to York this spring?  I'm thinking of still coming down on Thursday, even though it's only Fri/Sat.  Maybe I'll hit some of the bandit meets.

John, I haven’t made arrangements yet but the plan is to arrive on Thursday. My usual 6:30am flight gets to BWI mid afternoon and then the 75 minute drive to York. I took a later flight last October but didn’t like getting to my hotel room after midnight.

Alan, no problem at all!  Anytime is fine with me, I was just providing information. I didn’t want anyone to feel obligated to assemble on Thursday if they couldn’t make it. Especially with the Meet date changes throwing everyone’s routine off!

But we’re O Gaugers, we’re tough and we adapt!

Sorry it has taken so long for me to get involved in this thread..... work has been a monster the last 2 weeks......

Thank you Alan and Allan for chiming it...what you guys say makes a lot of sense......... As we all thought when we learned that York is becoming a 2 day event, "the times will be a changing".

Some people are coming Thursday, some are leaving Friday, and some are leaving Saturday.  Some people are coming Friday and leaving Friday, and some of these are leaving Saturday........everyone has different schedules and commitments.

I see no reason why there cannot be events both nights.  If the OGR get together is Friday night and only in October, then that's when it is.  However, I think a significant number of people are coming in Thursday.  We need a place to gather.......If everyone is going to meet at Quaker Steak, then I will see you there.

Things are changing and we have to adapt.  All I really care about his seeing my friends from across the country.  I look forward to the OGR event, even if it's only once a year and at October York  and on Friday.  We can carry the torch for April. In October, on Friday night, we will be there.

My question is that since there is no formal event on Friday this April, what should all of us who are staying in York do that night?  Make restaurant plans for a large group? Meet at a bar/restaurant? I am open to suggestions. Despite the fact that I have been regularly going to York since 1983 (missed once in 85 and once in 89), I do not know many of the local places.  I just know what is on route 30.

Peter

As a York Native (lived here my whole life) I can work on trying to figure something out for everybody. I will also talk to my boss at the Hobby Shop and see if maybe we can host something at the shop for yall to come and hang out friday night, maybe pizza and some drinks or if you guys would like something else, I can see what I can figure out for everybody! I look forward to seeing you all this spring!
