Has anyone made any sound or performance upgrades to any of the older Williams brass locos, like the Big Boys, GS-4s or 611s? The detail and size is great for the price but they could use a little help in the smoke and sound departments.
Thanks

I have installed PS-2 in my Big Boy, Challenger & Gs-4.  I put MTH smoke units in the GS-4 and the Big Boy.  The Big Boy took a lot of  grinding.  The Challenger I left the smoke as is.  The GS-4 required some body modification to make the plug work.  I'm well pleased with all 3.  I put Frog Snot on the GS-4 and it pulls as well as my MTH version.  All 3 have been trouble free for several years and they have a lot of hours on them.

About 4 years ago, I had TAS upgrade the Williams N&W J with TMCC, Railsounds and EOB speed control.  To me, the Williams brass J is the best looking J that has been produced in three rail O.  It runs and sounds great.

Last year, I had JDS upgrade my Williams Southern Mikado with DCS and it runs great.

Some of Williams later brass efforts are some of the smoothest running engines I own.

Good luck and happy railroading,

Don

I, too, have done PS2 conversions on a number of older Williams and Weaver brass steamers.  These engines are usually very smooth runners with good slow speed operation ability.  Since i rarely use smoke, I left the original Seuthe smoke units in place and functional.

These conversions usually involve some creative mounting of the speed sensor because the flywheels are smaller in diameter than the motor.  This kind of project is not for the faint of heart, but not really very difficult.

Careful shopping can produce VERY attractive prices on some of these.  My last 2 purchases were a PRR G5 (4-6-0) and a PRR B6sb (0-6-0) at a local train auction for $125.00 each - neither had ever been run.
