My Legacy H10 derailed and the engines L shaped coupler got bent, resulting in the infrared emitter slanting upward.  I’m getting “generic” rail sounds from the tender, smoke and lights on the engine, but it’s stalling, and the lights on the tender are not working. Either the emitter is damaged, a wire got loosened, or maybe the emitter is directional and not aligned with the receiver.
My question is whether the emitter needs to be pointing directly at the receiver on the tender to communicate effectively.

Yes, the 2 must be somewhat in alignment in order for the tender to function. Not sure if it getting bent did damage to the wires or transmitter.  Everything sounds normal for the tender not seeing the signal except the mentioning of the engine stalling. The engine should run on it’s own minus the tender with no issues.

Looking at the part on Lionel’s site without seeing the damage. You may have to remove the transmitter just to get it out of the way  to bend the drawbar back into shape. If the transmitter looks okay. You can place justthe engine on the track and power it up. No tender. Point your phone at the transmitter in camera mode. You should see a purple colored light coming from it if it’s working.

Thanks for your response Dave. I tried the camera test and did not see any purple light coming from the transmitter. Will likely replace both transmitter and possibly sensor on tender. I still need to reset the engine to factory settings to see if this will eliminate the stall. Got some good instruction from this forum on how to do that with Cab 3. If still not functioning, we have a guy here in Phoenix that can troubleshoot further.
