Yes, I did it with a couple of older 1121 switches and had to remove the eyelets holding the top and bottom sheet metal together.  They work just fine on fixed voltage as you would expect.  It's been awhile so I don't remember if there was anything specific I noticed, but basically which ever wire(s) go from the solenoid winding to the switch base need to be disconnected from the base and run out to your fixed voltage source  The other side of either solenoid gets juiced from the controller.  You do want to make sure your not over powering the bulbs in the switch or controller as they may melt the covers and you don't want that!!

If the switches that you are referring to are the Lionel O27 tubular track ones, then I submitted an article to OGR a few years back.  It dealt with:

1) wiring for external power - with many pictures

2) how to minimize and even eliminate the buzzing when train cars roll over the switch.

If you are referring to those switches and you would like for me to email a copy of the article, shoot an email to me (see my profile) and I'll get it to you.  I've sent it to over 50 people so far.

BTW: it's not earth shaking in it's originality, but it does take the time to explain and illustrate what needs done, and what to be careful doing.
