Is it ok to use 16 gauge wire to wire a Z4000 to a TIU?

16 gauge wire is rated to carry up to 13 amps.
If you are planning to run one train, yes. Personally, I use 14-gauge stranded for all train circuits, as I want to assure that my trains get as much power as possible, minimizing voltage loss. I buy the wire at Lowes/Home Depot
I'm sure others will chime in that thinner wire is ok, but I built my layout to certain standards based on my 70 years experience in model railroading.

RJR is giving you good advise, I use the 14 with the DCS TIU and have had no problems what so ever, 16 is a might light.

My layout is wired completely with stranded 16 gauge wire. No issues running a pair of lashups on one loop, total 8 motors and a pair of lighted cabooses.
Your mileage may vary.
