See the attached pic. I thought I had taken enough pics of what it looked like originally but lost them when I tried to download to my computer. Where does the pickup rollers from the middle rail power hook into the E-unit? Is there a ground hookup? I tried to look at the electrical dwg in the lionel book but I am missing something.I am so close to getting the old 682 back on the road...

To the same lug as the smoke unit.
I assume that your response is to the first question about where to hook up the wire from middle rail pickup...is ground just prevalent through the wheels and frame?
Yes. The Ground to the e-unit coil is switched by the lever.
Here us the schematic for steam engines with headlight & smoke:
I tried that and I could only get it to rotate in one direction...I must have a wire wrong somewhere.
Are you running this on the bench or in the loco?
The drum of the E unit only rotates in one direction. If you r saying the eng only moves in one direction, one of the 4 fingers is probably not making contact with drum. Check for bent fingers..
If the motor and e-unit are installed in the locomotive, does the e-unit sequence properly? If it does, then quite possibly a contact finger may not be touching the drum properly. With the e-unit sequenced to go in reverse, touch each contact in turn with a toothpick and put slight pressure on it. You may find one contact that will get the loco to run in reverse. The image has the wiring in color to better follow it.
