A friend last year gave to me a TV/Radio broadcast station building.  It's nice even though it's for HO.  It has the call letters WPLA.

Yesterday I was reading an old issue of OGR and saw a picture of the same building in O scale but it had the same call letters of WPLA.

I'm assuming the 'W' is used because that's the standard first radio call letter, at least to my knowledge.  But why PLA on both buildings???  Is that for PLAsticville???

thanks - walt

It's "scale" is probably closer to S, but that's OK. Many of the larger-prototype modern, nice "O" buildings, such as MTH's, are closer to S than O. 1:48 is just huge, really. They still look convincing, unless you are a Fine Scale modeler, and they wouldn't be reading this anyway.

Why I like Plasticville so much I don't know; I did not have it as a kid on my layout in the 50's, except for a gas station.

(If I were to win a big lottery, it be a lot of fun to have a real house built that looks just like the Plasticville Ranch House. Larger, of course - and not just in scale - but with the same look, details and feel.

Not sure about the pink roof variation, though.)

I would like to build a train layout building in the back yard that looks like the Plasticville suburban station.

Forty five years ago, I was in Wahpeton, North Dakota installing an X-ray machine. The downtown architecture looked just like Plasticville to my eye. Very comforting to see such a lovely town.

A little known fact, Ron Burgundy got his start in TV news in the late ‘60s anchoring the WPLA Action Eyewitness Newswatch Nightbeat broadcast.  Ratings tanked and they had to let him go after six months.  After that he picked up a part time gig making ice cream cones at the Plasticville Frosty Bar until an agent from San Diego was passing through town offered him an anchor job there.  True story!
