In this instance, I think Lionel was trying to give the car a 'railroadie' type number. In the real railroad world X stands for 'extra' All early short boxcars have the X as a prefix also. (X2454, X6454) Lionel seems to have stopped the X prefix around the time the 6464 series started. Lionel used a X as a suffix on the original box sometimes if the item was different or as a component of a packaged set.
