Hey Dennis... few years back i took the plunge and got a nice #746 short stripe tender... i havent run it yet... that thing was built for Super O.... it doesnt look as good on tubular track...
Arnold, are you aware your 665 should have the Elesco feedwater heater on top of the boiler front?
I discovered the part from some other locos fit up to others just as well.
Lionel 736. This was the first Lionel train I ever owned. It came from my parents at Christmas of 1960. It has been well taken care of and I still have it. It still runs great, although it probably has the highest time of any of my locomotives.
2353 Santa Fe F3.
I received one for Christmas in 1953, and I loved the growl.

Bob,
That sounds exquisite -- both the track and the steamer!
B&O Budd #400. Still have it along with 2559 & 2550. I remember seeing them in the Lionel catalog and immediately putting them at the top of my Xmas list. RICH
I've been following this thread, but haven't posted anything yet as I can't come up with a favorite at this point. However, with all the interest in the 665/2065 variants, I thought those folks might want to see what they'd look like with a few "modifications". I'm not a purist. If I think it will look good, I add it.

I'd stick with white class lights. Who wants to stop There are tons of reds and greens; the white, not so many.
I'd add a detail insert with a surface mount led in it over the firebox hole with no detail. It's glow is a bit bright. The tender lights I like, but would like better if receased and lens added, or tip flattened. (Even as kid flush or recessed lights got my attention from some reason)
The 665 was the inspiration for this K's mod to fix it's broken "ears". Come to find out later some proto.s had them on the face. I just drilled two holes and filled them with clear glue. Hit them with a red marker too but it has faded some. It looks redder in person though, look close at you can see some pink here.

Roger... really cool...
Adriatic,

My iPhone creates a corona around the lights. They are far redder than they appear in the photo (the photo shows them as reddish/white). They're not.

So, I've been watching eBay for some of the steam engines I've always thought nice. (Berks, and all versions of the Hudsons. NOT interested in any 773.)
Now why is it, that when I've tried to sell off my really nice PW stuff, I have to post it a rock bottom prices and then dicker even lower to move it... and now all the items I could be interested in are going for prices WAY above what I was able to sell off for???
Thought PW prices were way down? I'm not seeing lower prices.
Andre
Depends on when you buy or sell, back in the great recession it was a poor time to sell and a good time to buy, today in the Trump boom it is a good time to sell and a bad time to buy.

Speaking of modifications, a few years ago I got a beat-up 2046. I replaced the front with a Berk front, added a swinging bell, and drilled a hole on top for a whistle. I then sent it to Len Caparelli for painting and motor overhaul. Lastly I got a replacement tender shell with New York Central on the side. It now looks as good if not better than my Berk. Someday I would like to get a 1946 Berk- I have the 1946 Turbine with the same drive.

Yow! I thought I was the only one who'd ever done those mods! The 736 boiler front is a drop-in replacement for the 2046's, and it does look much better. I did the other alterations you mention, too.
When I was a kid, "Lionel Lines" on rolling stock (as opposed to actual road names) really bothered me. So the NYC tender shell was a natural addition.
I used all Lionel parts for the facelift, and my 2046 looks so much better that I have to wonder why Lionel didn't do them that way in the first place.
It now looks as good if not better than my Berk.
Not sure I'd go quite that far. But then, I put a NYC shell on my 736's tender, too.
So did I. The only advantage for the Berk now is the six wheel trucks on the tender. Some day I hope to find the 726 tender and then I will move the six wheel to the 2046.I also added backup lites to my 736, 2046 and 671.
I hope I get this right this time: the 2046 is identical to the 646 except for the cab number. Is that true?
Usually the 646 has the plastic rear truck but basically yes.

Whew, I was worried that maybe I had a touch of dyslexia when I mixed up the 646 and 665 the other day.
By the way. One of the best lawyers in the World has dyslexia, David Boies, who has successfully done mega trials. He has an amazing photographic memory, which he developed to compensate for his dyslexia.

try putting the 2065 boiler front on the front of a 736, its a direct swap, now you'll have a berk with a feed water ….looks amazing!!!

2046, 2056, & 646 all share the same boiler casting and MOST of the same parts, 646 being the johnny come lately, having the cheapened sheet metal rear truck with ornamental side frames...
Can someone post a picture of this PLEASE? I would LOVE to see this on a 736!

Thanks for that information, Harmonyards. I have a 2046 and 646, tend to prefer my 646 because it is in better condition with better magnetraction, but will start running my 2046 some more and look more closely at both engines.

Might be able to make a reasonable facsimile of a Santa Fe Berkshire (rebuilt from a B&M Berkshire).

Very cool on the Berk w/feedwater heater front. Gives a reversible (didn't drill/modify any original parts) variation for one's layout! IF I ever took the "PWP*" challenge, I could see wanting one of those!

no mods at all, only thing is there is no lamp socket provision on the 2065 boiler front. I used a simple clip on lamp socket from a cheapy mpc passenger car, clipped to the smoke unit, again, no mods, but the wire connection....no biggy..
Very interesting thread. For me it is the 1946 only model 726 with large metal tender. It didn't have the e unit slot in the top (which I just never liked) and it ran really well at lower speed. The bulb smoke wasn't very good, and it doesn't pull as well as the 736, but I just like the look of it.
Well... as I mentioned above... the prices in PW have changed upwards since my last attempt to be involved therein just a couple years or so ago. To wit:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LIONE...047675.c100008.m2219
Badly chipped, some rust pitting, etc. All for a paltry $130.
To put that in perspective, those few short years ago I ended up selling this beauty (including the bottle of smoke pills) for well under $100...

It's bizarre how these prices change. Two years ago, I bought a 1950 773 (with the die cast tender) in gorgeous shape for $650 on the Bay. I had my choice of about 6 of them, all in that price range. About 2 months after my purchase, the prices climbed up to average around $1300. I'm glad I pulled the trigger when I did, but now it's crazy.

We think a great deal alike -- so did I. Red rear running lights and white backup light (even though it's still illuminated when the locomotive is going forward). Visitors always comment favorably on those lights.
One of my favorite postwar engines, Santa Fe 2243 A-B pulling some 027 pw passenger cars.

sometimes the RR locomotives can be had on the cheap, they lack magnets, so sometimes folks pass them by, I think the RR's run better than the magnatraction locos personally, they don't have to work as hard to overcome the magnets, they run cooler, and longer IMO....but now I might have opened Pandora's box....
Shucks, I'm going to FORGET the idea of getting some PW steam engines. I'm gonna' start saving my spare change for something more affordable and practical (can use it daily when the weather's cold). I'm going looking at THIS:
