Did a clean up, lubrication and roller replacement on my friend's ZW. The display lights and shows 0 toIMG_3751 21 volts on each terminal, whistle and direction buttons working, nothing is loose or broken and the case is shiny and not cracked. He wants to sell it at next weeks train meet. What is it worth with the fancy lighted display.

In my experience, a complete and functioning postwar ZW commands $100-150.

The addition of the Lionel 6-14077 Volt/Amp meter doesn't really have a hold in the hobby - It's engineering is flawed so it doesn't accurately display readings for common wiring schemes. However, it seems to add $80-100 to the right person.

As @eddie g stated, it is really only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Also, you might want to make sure the red and green jewels are the correct location.

For many years I have reconditioned and sold ZW transformers. Many of the sales have been to forum members. Right now if I have a ZW with an excellent case and I totally re-condition it including new rollers, a new cord,  testing and confirming the breaker  works properly  and converting the  rectifier discs to diodes, on such a transformer at a train meet or on a sale to a forum member I could probably get $145 to $160.

On a unit  with new rollers but  with the original circuit breaker, whether it works or not,  with the original cord if it shows any wear at all  and with the old rectifier discs you would be lucky to get $90.

Also, it will take a unique purchaser to both want the accessory you added to the transformer and also to pay the full amount that you invested in the accessory.

Unfortunately, prices in our hobby are in a tailspin and the demand for conventional ZW transformers has really dropped off in the past couple of years.

Gentlemen,

Jim knows what he is talking about, and on top of that, his ZW and KW restoration work is top shelf.  I thought so much of his work, I upgraded both his KW and ZW work with female Banana plug fittings.

I have several of his reconditioned Transformers being used in our new Train Room, they are all still working perfectly after many years of usage.

BMoran4 is correct the light covers need to be switched ,they are reversed on the ZW Transformer.

Good to see you posting Jim, hope you had a great Christmas & New Years.

PCRR/Dave

The KW & ZW Transformers on the lower Power Station are Jim's restoration work.

If you have an eBay ID, you can login and search for completed sales. eBay charges a fee to sell, but at times you can get more than swap meets and this forum. I would sell the meter separately, as Jim pointed out that some might not want it. While the meter is not a great product as mentioned above, it has good value in an auction. I checked the prices for both on eBay. The prices for the ZW are all over the place and up to what I mentioned above. The meter is fairly rare. Most of the sales are for the newer meter for the ZW-C. Make sure you specify the model number when you sell it.

How much to service an existing ZW?

I wouldn't worry so much about the repair costs for a ZW. What I would be concerned about is the insurance charges and shipping to and from the repair center.
