In commemoration of the arrival of the new MTH CNJ Train Master, my company's official photographer arranged for a photo session of it and the current generation of North Jersey Coast Line commuter power in the form of NJ Transit's ALP-46 posed side by side. The CNJ 2410 was delivered in 1956 as part of Jersey Central's second TM order and was stricken from the roster in 1969. NJT's ALP-46 locomotives entered service shortly after the beginning of the new millenium so the two types of motive power pictured are separated by many decades of North Jersey Coast Line operations.

There's an interesting story regarding the retirement of the CNJ's Train Masters to be told.

 

When financing was obtained via C&O subsidiary Railease and NJDOT for 13 GP40P units numbered 3671-3683, it was assumed by most the new power would replace the 13 Train Masters on a one-for-one basis. Despite the railroad's perilous financial condition, CNJ's Elizabethport, NJ shop forces had developed a reputation for superb maintenance and the majority of the TM fleet remained in good working order even with the well publicized challenges associated with maintaining the opposed piston prime mover. The F-M locomotives had proven themselves versatile as effective passenger and freight power - several of them had already been reassigned exclusively to freight service with deactivated steam generators - so CNJ management had intentions to keep them. Unfortunately, due to the aforementioned financial difficulties of the railroad, the bankruptcy court ordered the sale of the Train Masters and they were purchased by Naparano Iron & Metal in Newark where many well known classes of locomotives were sent to meet their fate. Had it not been for that court order, CNJ's Train Masters would have joined those of N&W and SP as the last Train Masters still in service on American railroads during the 70s.
