My dad and I have been working on this train layout since winter 2011-12. Opinions, comments, questions, and tips welcome! The layout is MTH O-gauge. Track is MTH realtrax with no cork roadbed or anything like that. The layout is run with DCS. Power is an MTH 2-8-0 in Steelers livery and a MTH PCC car in similar colors. Also, the D.A.R.E. Model RR club ocasionly lets me lease their MTH Montour SW9. An MTH water tower, station, and switch tower are one of only a few professionaly made structures. The other two are a ready-built house and a painted kit of Independance Hall, both Plasticville structures. A stained glass cottage and several lego buildings round out the accesory lineup. Vehicles are 1/36 scale Kinsmart vehicles and a few other scales from assorted manufactuers. The mountian was made with a cardboard frame, stuffed with newspaper held together with masking tape and covered with Plastercloth.Rolling stock is all MTH, with the exception of a Lionel boxcar. Figures are lego minifigures and footbal guys. Businesses include a handtruck rentel shop, a travel agency, a radio station, a curio shop, a gun shop, a police station, a grocery store, a cafe, a razor blade factory, a hotel, a farm, and of course the railroad.

Its a nice layout that probably has taught you the basics of electricity, certainly mountain construction and some carpentry. Good stuff!
Your layout looks like a lot of fun. Enjoy!
Fun layout! I like all of the activity.

Great work Daniel. I wish you many many years of enjoyment with your railway.
Nice work. I will send your photos to a neighbor who is a Steelers fan.
A lot of fun. I like the mountain, too!
Your layout looks like a treasure already, and the more you and your father invest time together in it, and buying things you both like for it, the more the treasure will increase. As time goes on, you'll be looking back and cherishing every minute spent on it. Continue having fun and sharing its growth with us when you can.

Being from Brown's country I got a bit of a twitch when I saw that Steelers train! Looks like a lot of fun. I really like the football field and the tank at the police station.
Enjoy!

A really nice layout. Enjoy this wonderful hobby. Killian

POW/MIA YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN
Excellent layout. I love the way you have incorporated Lego's and other items into it.
Enjoy it, and have a blast. Also, when it does come up, don't worry too much about what anyone says about your pike. As long as you like it and have fun; that's what it's all about!
Thanks for the comments everyone. I'll keep you all posted if anything happens.

Big news. I brought home my club's Montour SW9 home again. And also, we went to Greenberg's train show in Monroeville and bought a CSX SD70ACe (see my HELP! post). Today I got it back after getting it fixed, and it ran sweet as a nut. I combined my 2-8-0, the SW9, and the new SD for an ultimate lash-up. Pictures coming soon!
I'd say Great stuff. My grand son would love the lego. Keep going, you have a great start.
Daniel,
You and your dad are doing a fine job. I notice that you are using MTH Real Trax. My layout also has Real Trax, and I have had trains stop in difficult to reach places because the electrical rail joints are not reliable. The joints on the Real Trax are copper strips underneath the roadbed, so fixing them is not practical.
Take a look at the sketch. It contains techniques used by OGR Forum members, and I tried them all. I found that "J" works best and it is the most recommended by members, so I suggest that you use "J" on all center rail joints where the track is not accessible or difficult to reach, and also use "J" as a repair for any joint the fails.
Keep the pictures coming as construction progresses. You can download the sketch by clicking on the photo icon below, and do a "Save Image As."

I really like the rail wheels you added to the backhoe for the track repair crew.

Some new pictures of the layout. The one with the trolley all messed up is a attempt at an panorama shot with an iPhone. The one with kermit is when a school thing for a sibling required pictures of the frog around the house. The dump car was bought at a train show. For ChristmasI got a Lionel flatcar with a rubber-band submarine on it, lettered for the Carniege Science Center. The last shot is a triple-header of my Steelers 2-8-0, CSX SD70ACe, and the D.A.R.E. Model RR Cub's Montour SW9. All the engines are MTH.
