You use a slicer application to read an STL object and make gcode specific to YOUR printer.
Gcode is line by line move commands.
A slicer program is so called because it works like a meat slicer- it cuts the object into logical layers- and makes the line by line moves of gcode to "fill in" and make that shape for that layer.
@Vernon Barry - Thank you so much. We already printed the fire hydrant and wood crate for practice.

Vernon is spot on!
When you find an .STL file you want to print, download it to your computer.
Your ender5 will work great with "Ultimakers Cura" software (free too!). This will slice the .STL file into G-code for the printer.
Like stated, you have to tell the software what printer you are using, along with filament type and temperature + bed temperature etc.
There is a great youtuber (Teaching Tech) that has a lot of great how-to videos. From setting up the printer, and the software setup too!
Bed leveling will be your enemy, once you get used to dialing in the leveling, the ender5 is an excellent machine. I used one for years before upgrading! There are aftermarket "bed springs" on amazon that are orange. One of the best upgrades! Once leveled, it hardly has to be readjusted as much. The stock silver springs always had to be fine tuned.
Good luck and any questions please ask!
@p8ntballer789. Just curious what did you upgrade to

I upgraded to the Bambu X1c after having an ender 3 and ender 5 for 5ish years. I run a paintball and airsoft shop so I use them all to print accessories and parts! The bambu is a game changer but still enjoy my enders!
