This is my first post, so please bear with me. Just picked up a Lionel #6-8665/#6-9176 BAR Jeremiah O'Brien with caboose. It's only been out of the box for display and has never run, as far as I know. The reverse unit is so loud, especially at lower speed.  What can be done about the "buzzing"?

Also, the contact roller on the caboose is very loose causing the light to flicker.  Is it supposed to have some tension on it? Right now, gravity is the only thing making it contact the rail.

Some e-units are noisier than others. The hollow shell of your engine makes it worse.

I usually just turn the e-unit off, as I don't have much occasion to back up.

Some folks convert their e-units to operate on D.C. which will make them silent. One has to be able to solder to do this.

Other folks find that adjusting the bends on the e-unit pawl reduces the noise.

I am certain others with join in with more specific directions.

All of the illuminated rolling stock of this era is like this. The same roller assemblies are used today, but both trucks have rollers & wipers for current collection.

You can install the collector assembly (part number is 9050-150) which snaps right in to the other truck, and run a wire to connect the two center rail rollers.

I'm not into replacing parts just yet, so turning it off is my best option.  I don't want the engine waking up the kids on Christmas Eve. Thanks.
