1034 Lionel Xformer and Lion Chief

I have a 1034 transformer with 20 volt output. Will the new Thomas engine that operates on either 18 volt AC or DC be able to handle 20 volts AC? If not how could I limit it to 18 volts. I have an old o27 system with many old switches so I want a transformer that will handle shorts and derails. I doubt the new 80 watt unit would be a good purchase for me because of its "fuse" design.

Advice please.
